Dourado Keepers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
one of my favorite fish, when people ask for piranhas, i tell them i have the piranha eater, the dorados. I had a school of them in the store, and they would rip anything you throw in the tank into pieces. Incredible killing machine. I love the adult coloration of the salminus maxilosus!

however, the one i have, i have sufficient reason to believe it could be the brazilian form, salminus brasiliensis, it lacks the massive porportioned jaw that extems behind the eye, and its a pussy compared to the long term resident, mr. grouper :)

i live in so cal too fugupuff. are you talking the infamous bumble bee grouper? and if so where can i get one of these dorados and one of the groupers. ive been interested in the groupers since i saw them, and the dorado sounds pretty sweet so let me know if you have any info you could share. thanks, MFE

so where are these dorados and how do i go about getting one. never really paid much attention to them. the last pic looks like a salmon or trout type of fish. are they tropical and how big do they get. i want one if they are as cool as you all seem to think. info would be appreciated.

theve have always reminded me as being trout like, they look very similar, but with much worse tempers

if im not wrong, the dourado is also known as the freshwater salmon
Indeed. In Jacques Gery's 1977 book "Characoids of the World," he refers to dorados (Salminus spp.) as "South American salmon" and the closely related Brycon spp. as "South American trout." However, he cautions that, despite the superficial resemblence, they are not closely related to true salmonids.

I have two dorados, one of which appears to be S. brasilensis and the other S. maxillosus. They are around 12 - 14 inches in length and school with seven redtail brycon (Brycon rubricauda or orbignyanus, I'm not sure) of approximately the same size. I also have a 20" jardini arowana, 20" mbu puffer, several Indo dats, and some Madagascan cichlids in with them. The tank is a 360 gallon (96"L x 36"W x 24"H). Aggression doesn't appear to be a problem largely because the Brycons are as big and tough as the dorados. *crosses fingers*

are the differences between brycon, and the two species of dorados pretty obvious even when young, and what are they exactly???

The differences between dorados and redtail brycons are subtle with small fish, but become more apparent as the fish grow larger. Essentially, dorados have: 1) a more powerful jaw structure, 2) a more streamlined profile versus the taller brycons, 3) horizontal dash-dot stripes along the sides versus just plain silver on the brycons, and 4) yellowing of the dorsal, anal, and caudal (tail) fins as dorados get larger versus the red fins of redtail brycons.

Size is not always the determinant factor, as some of the redtail brycon species get very large. For example, Brycon guatemalensis (machaca) gets to 59 cm or nearly 2 feet and Brycon orbignyanus gets to 79 cm or 31 inches. I hope my RTBs aren't B. orbignyanus!
