Has anyone here ever successfully kept a dovi in a community tank? Really love this fish and have a chance to get one but, I don't want a single fish tank, I would like to keep my aggro community :D

I have a couple myself but I can't keep them in any other tank beside what they are in now. But I'm raising a small one right now hoping to put him in my 180gal that has tons of CA.SA so I we will see. I mean I have Red Devil along with a Flowerhorn and I don't have any issue but again every person has a different touch on keeping big fish together. Hope this helps

hey mate i keep 7 dovii in my community tank along with festaes, peacock bass, longed finned oscars and lots of other stuff.

I have successfully kept dovii in a community ca tank. No real problems. Just have to monitor them. Plus depends on the personality of the dovii.

Id doubt anyone has kept male 12+" dovii in a community tank unless the tank was over 300 gallons...and theyll reach a foot in less than a year if properly taken care of. If youve got a tank that big, its possible. I have a 265, have had 4 males at separate times that I had to rehome, all under 10 inches, because they started trying to decimate every other tankmate.

Yeah, I have a 150 now, but am planning a 400 gal L shape tank in the near future. I have a chance to get a 7" male and a 6" female mota. I want the mota for sure but am on the fence about the dovi :nilly:

I've done it a few times, but you are right, the tanks (and ponds!) were always huge.

The problem is most fishkeepers need to multiply their "minimum tank size" by a factor of 5-10 before the are even close to the needs of the fish.

One thing, though, is it will always be easier to raise a dovii from a young fish in a community setting than to introduce a murdering psycho who's been isolated for most of his life. That said, I have introduced large fish into community setting anyway, but it takes planning. A friend needed to home an 18" dovii for a few months, and I introduced him to a system by caging him for the first two weeks. Once he was introduced he was fine.

A fish that is accustomed to eating feeders may never be safe with much smaller fish though.

He says the dovi is in a comm tank right now with no problems but it's post 12" that worries me. May be fine now but flip one day. I think I'm just gonna let this one go. That being said, how about a midas? :D

Dovii are awesome and i think alot of people give them a really bad rep!
Any fish you keep by itself and then try to put in a community tank will likely kill other fish.
I have watched two Dovii grow from 2" to nearly 13" at my lfs, they are in a 5x2x2 with plenty of other Fish.
Midas are brilliant i have a small 6" one currently and i think it will do really well in your setup.
It would help a little if you posted your tank dimensions, you can get away with a 1 foot depth in a cichlid tank.
