Hi frank were have you see a 28" Dovii dude, I've never seen one bigger then 20" in captivity, that would be a beast lol
I forget where, but somebody on youtube has a Dovii that is between 26 and 28 inches long... It is the bulkiest fish ive ever seen. Looks to be at least a solid foot and some tall and half of that wide, if not more... Absoluelty massive. I forgot what channel it was though but i will try to find it.
Here. Guapote mel.
Talks about size at maybe 5 mins but the vid is worth watching IMO

That things is bigger than anything ive seen on mfk, although there are lenty of dovii threads i havent read... But seriously. Imagine that big mouth biting you during water changes. Pretty sure he could eat my hand.
Wow he's a beast,biggest I've seen in captivity
yea, there's more stuff out there too.....unfortunately, some of it is just what we old people call "reading material" :P ......and I've ''read" 32", but only 28" has been confirmed as an accepted record or some lunacy like that......Mel's is Nicaraguan, right?....I forget which ones get that crazy hump like that...why don't we ever see any Hondurans?

Yeah frank I would also like to know which type gets the big hump, my dudes pritty big but doesn't have a hump he looks very much like that pic at Sydney aquarium, but obviously not that big, but then again he's only around 3 years old and will still have a lot of growing yet, any one know what type the guy is in the pic at Sydney aquaruim?

well if the OP's and the one in the video is CR, then I say Mel's has to be either Nicaraguan or Honduran, right? I honestly don't know, Dovii are pretty new to me. I always bred Jags back in the day....they were the only one of the 5 species that was available in my area until recently

Johnny, you either have a baby sized hand or a giant fish. Also thanks for all those videos, nice to see some full grown beasts. Love it when people go the distance with a fish. As far as I know the Nics get the big hump and have the bigger mouths. I was surprised to hear that their was so much variance between the two, apparently aside from coloration there is a good deal of difference in the body structure based on the location. I think the Costa Ricans get stockier as well, football shaped more than elongated.

Ha ha I wouldn't say he's a giant quite yet, he's around the 17"-18" mark could be a little bigger I guess, my tank is 30" wide and he's way more the half that, from your description I would say mine is a not a Costa Rican as you can see he's very long but also quite stocky now, he's very thick maybe 4" maybe mines a nic but is not old enough to have the big hump yet not sure
