Dovii or Peacock bass???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do not have one, I do not have a big enough tank for one. thought I had made that clear. If not I am sorry, my mistake. I do keep jags. I have the tanks for that.
Dont jags grow to the same size as doviis?!

Each to there own with suggestions on what size tank they should keep for their fish in, obviously common sense would prevail when the fish gets bigger. But just because your opinion on what size tank I should keep a dovii in shouldnt stop me or anyone else for that fact that wants to keep a dovii. My tank is a decent size and its not like its a 30 or 55 gallon. If I choose to keep this dovii and he blows up to be an absolute monster than obviously I would have no problem upgrading to a bigger tank, or find a more suitable home for it. How else are you going to build experience?

There is a video of a massive 22" costa rican male dovii on youtube thats kept in a 180g tank looks very comfortable with ample of room.

I have never had a Dovi but do have 3 PBass. Our bass seem to recognize me as their food source and watch me real close when I walk by the tank. As for tank size both the Dovi and Bas have the potential to exceed 24 inches in size. One thing to consider in that is that bass are speedsters who could really use a 10 foot or better tank. ot sure about the dovi's swimming habits so they may be fine in a 6 foot 240 gallon tank. But as you have stated you or not opposed to upgrading your tank so one thing to think about is the habits of which ever fish you would really like to keep.
I can't tell you either way as I would like to get a dovi. But now that I have these bass I wouldn't want to give them up either. Just get a 10x3x30 tank and kepp yor 150 and keep both fish. Well that is what I would try and pull off if possible.

SaltyPlum SaltyPlum regardless of which fish you keep down the line you would have to upgrade to a bigger tank
no matter what. both are large growing fish that will out grow the 150g. you can definitely keep them in
the 150g and grow them out while saving money or what not for a bigger tank in the near future. with that
said choosing which fish you want depends on what kind of aquarium you want to have. whether you want a
community tank or a single wet pet tank. also 180g is the very bare minimum for a dovii. dovii's & bass alike
can reach 30"+ though rare it is possible. imo a 8x3 or 8x4 would be ideal as a life time tank for a dovii or pbass
and of course the bigger the better.

For now I cant afford to go out and buy a brand new monster dream tank, but it is definitely on the cards in the near future. Totally agree the bigger the tank the better!! But due to where i live the price tag for anything regarding this hobby is more than double to what most meblmbers on this forum would be use to paying.

For the tank that I have now I know it is more suited to house a single wet pet. But knowing I will be upgraded in the near future I would definitely want to make to most out of the extra space.

The way that the bass swims and how fast he eats feeders really amazes me. I will drop 10 feeders in the tank at the same time and the bass would smash everyone of them in less than 30 seconds. The dovii would be sitting in his log and wouldnt even know that I put feeders in the tank lol

if you know you can upgrade to a bigger tank within a year and half / 2 year go with which ever fish you want if you dont think
you can upgrade to a larger tank in that time fram i suggest looking into a different species like a jaguar cichlid or the likes.
similar to the dovii and related as a parachromis but smaller growing. a jaguar cichlid is also more forgiving compared to
the dovii aggression wise but of course no 2 fish is the same. as for the dovii sitting in the log and not taking the feeders
right away it's probably because it hasnt settled in the tank 100% yet or it gets spooked by the bass's fast movement and
burst of speed. or it can be the feeders are too big as bass have bigger mouth compared to the dovii.

Due to the dovii just always sitting in his log is why i am starting to like the bass more as the bass is always visible and so fast at eating feeders. Never thought that the dovii may still be trying to settle. I find it boring when he just sits in there all the time

i never heard dovii's being boring. theyre true to the name monster fish.
the one i had always glass banged begging for food and followed
me around in the tank. great and amazing personality and response
to me.

Well thats exactly what I want in a fish and from what i have read and researched doviis fit that description. I hope my dovii comes around beacause atm he is a boring fish just sitting in his log

best way of achieving this is giving the dovii a tank for itself. if you have a spare
tank sitting around why not set it up and keep it separated to watch each fish's
behavior and etc.
