Hi everyone.

Recently purchased myself a 3" dovii and was wondering what your past experience with this fish is and if you could answer some question for me

How do I/can I sex a juvenile?
How long does it take them to get get really big? He is currently kept in a 4x18x18 by itself and want to know how long i should expect this to last. I will definitely upgrade the tank when required.
How personable does this fish become?
How many have you kept a male dovii to grow 16+", is there any key tips you can give me?

Looking forward to enjoying my new pet for years to come. :headbang2

cheers

I just got my first Dovii about a month ago he was about 2.5 inches and now he's 4 inches lol eats like a pig and leads his tank of 9 tank mates.
The first couple weeks he was very skittish but is always up at the front of the tank now begging for food. I asked around here and people told me when they hit 10 inches the really become a wet pet. I know a a Dovii breader and expert and he said they will grow 16 to 18 max in a tank unless you have it in like a 600 gallon plus.

Both my Dovii are around 3" at the moment in a 4-2-2 grow out.

Easy to sex at that size. Female is yellow and male is blue/green lol

The males tend to have small dots all over there bodies as well.

16" is usually the max you will see on a captivity Dovii. (Now I know before people start moaning that they can get bigger than that but show me a 24" Dovii in an aquarium)

For a single specimen I would say 180 - 220 gallon is fine with very good filtration. 250+ for a pair on there own.

But I will wait for the people that dont keep them to start chiming in with the "they need 1000g + tanks etc"

Female in the background, was in a holding tank. THEY ARE NOT KEPT WITH THE MBUNA before people chime in, was a holding tank.

Male

You can see the bars more clearly on the female that the spots on the male.

Tips wise, they are either really friendly or really aggressive. Watch your fingers as they bite pretty hard.

Just spend alot of time around the tank and they settle in well and get used to you being there.

Regular water changes is a must as they eat alot and are very messy.

You will see a wee while out the 55g your using especially is he/she is on her own. Would probably say about 6 months but will depend on the fish and how quickly they grow.

Within a year you will be looking at about a 6-2-2 which should do for a few years atleast.

Yes my buddy bob has a 8 year old dovii in a 300 gallon and he's 16 to 18 inch pretty maxed out

Yea, because you have 2 dovii around 3", you are the know all end all expert now, right?:screwy:

You cant sex them the way you say AT ALL like that at 2-3"....depends on their race (nic, CR) diet, tank conditions etc....and the spotting is in the unpaired fins on males.

Can get bigger than 16" in captivity and a 180 isnt really sufficient...probably what would be considered a bare minimum.

And if "people that dont keep them" start chiming in about them needing a bigger tank, then they know more than you, the expert 3" dovii keeper.

Lose the attitude, read up more on the fish you have and then, maybe, you wont sound like such a tool, kid.
