You cant sex them the way you say AT ALL like that at 2-3"....depends on their race (nic, CR) diet, tank conditions etc....and the spotting is in the unpaired fins on males.
Can get bigger than 16" in captivity and a 180 isnt really sufficient...probably what would be considered a bare minimum.
And if "people that dont keep them" start chiming in about them needing a bigger tank, then they know more than you, the expert 3" dovii keeper.
Lose the attitude, read up more on the fish you have and then, maybe, you wont sound like such a tool, kid.
