Yea, because you have 2 dovii around 3", you are the know all end all expert now, right?:screwy:

You cant sex them the way you say AT ALL like that at 2-3"....depends on their race (nic, CR) diet, tank conditions etc....and the spotting is in the unpaired fins on males.

Can get bigger than 16" in captivity and a 180 isnt really sufficient...probably what would be considered a bare minimum.

And if "people that dont keep them" start chiming in about them needing a bigger tank, then they know more than you, the expert 3" dovii keeper.

Lose the attitude, read up more on the fish you have and then, maybe, you wont sound like such a tool, kid.

they really need to add a "like" button to this forum haha

Yes 24 inch tank!

You are correct about the sexing but a dovii or any fish for that matter that grow really big in the wild have a hard time growing really big in a tank unless the fish has a lot of swimming room.... Swimming is the key for growth and food if a fish can burn energy by swimming (exercise) it will grow just like any living thing so abundance of food lots of swiming room equals growth.

Take that swimming away growth comes to a halt... Timing is key aswell
Put a 1 year old dovii in a 600 gallon and he will become a monster.

Chill, people got a right to their opinion. I had a female years ago in a 240 with my male Umbee she got to 14 inches.

Future feeders for the dovii :D

Ha Ha this cracks me up:) but aside from that i think this thread can become a great tool or info thread for the unexpirienced about dovii if we all can contribute to factual info. over the years i have read numerous threads asking about dovii or other cichlids and everyone asks the same questions... now i can understand some of us getting frustrated with repeating ourselves but more importantly if we or MFK can come up with some sort of fish keeping for dummies that is more of an updated version form all the books and stuff plus add personal expiriences will end up doing everyone a huge favor:) but also make it so the threads are visible to the public, not everyone knows about the search engines and will end up being reminded to either search or refer to certain threads for answers. lol thats just my .02 cents;)

I have never kept a dovii and definitely won't anytime soon. Maybe in a few years when I have the money and the space for all my dream tanks... but after seeing many videos and reading many stories I wouldn't keep an adult male dovii in anything smaller than 300 gal, and considering how fast they grow and how aggressive they are I'd probably want to have the tank set up before getting the fish.

His growth will depend on water and feedings. This breeder/expert I do not know where some of them come up with there statements thinking that there is only one answer one experience. But the fact is I have seen them 12 to 20 plus inches in a 100 gal tank.

these are my two that i've had for a little
over a yr. the male is approx 71/2" and the female
is approx 6" They have already had 2 sets of babies

Also the largest I have seen in person was a Monster. Had to be 24" rang and 4" thick. Not to mention the height. There is no way he could have been comfortable in a 180 or a 300 24" wide. I'm not saying every Dovii will get this size but I think more often then not it is tank size and water conditions that keep them from reaching there potential.
