It showed up on monitor........maybe it's time to invest in some new technology:ROFL:. I'll post up some better pics tonight. That is something I worry about, pics showing up fine on a LCD HD but then if guys have an older monitor they look like crap.

Oh ok. Technology is going to unclamp the fins in your picture?

Not that I know of????? You just said you couldn't tell by the pic. I did not respond to your post though. Maybe be specific about what you need in the pics....unclamped fins, more clarity maybe a closer shot.:)
Have you ever seen the spotting on the unpaired fins get washed out like IME it does when young? Like VCRW said it does when they get stressed or are hiding.....which from my experience all young Dovii do.

Lol Sorry, I guess I didn't know about a male's spots washing out because I've only owned one Dovii and he's was never stressed and never hid. His spots were always there. And I thought I was pretty specific about what to look for. Anyway...it's a good looking Dovii. Take care and see you around. :)

My comments about the spots were strictly about them at a very small size. Id say always under 2-2.5 inches. Ive seen hundreds at a time in a huge tank and one day youd look at them and see what you thought were a bunch of males, the next youd see what looked like all females. I just assumed it was their moods/stress/water conditions causing them to fluctuate their colors/markings.

Alright fellahs, I am posting a better picture....I pray. This thread did not go as planed but oh well:nilly:. Many people on here suggest the spotting on the body as a sure way to tell a female and a male apart. The one I posed is a male about 6". He does not show the spotting that he will be here soon. Also there is none on his unpaired fins. My 8" Costa Rican has the undeniable spotting on the body as well as the unpaired fins. This Nic is not showing this even at his size. The Female nic has more pronounced spotting then him and is half his size. He is also not the dominate fish in the tank right now.....and I hope to move and get the new tank up and running before he has had enough of the EBJD. Balton IME all young Dovii are shy and skitterish when small and this causes stress and IME causes fish to wash out. Also with a really good pic he would still not show signs of spotting on the un paired....but you would be able to tell anyway:naughty:. I have seen a few small Dovii that don't fear anything but often this does not seem to be the case. Personally I have only had two batches of 5 to pick out a male and female from both which can be done by the 2-3" mark. Thanks for trying to sex him anyway and I won't do this again. No hard felling guys.:headbang2

Based on head shape and coloration my GUESS would be male. No science just guessing. My male's head is shaped a lot like that and it seems to be developing more of hump in the head shape than the females I have had.

I dont think there were hard feelings man, its all good.

2 things are for sure:

Hes a good looking fish (is he the Rio Heredia variant?) and that EBJD has a limited amount of time left on Earth if he stays in that tank with the Dovii.

It does look like male from the head shape and the hump that it is forming and i do like how the color is turning out on him...how big is he right now?

No this is the lake Nicaragua variant. My other two are the Rio. I am surprised though at this size he is showing the colors that resemble the Rio variant. I'm sure in time he will start showing the turquoise in the fins and purplish body....I hope. This is a grow out tank and I should be moving next month......I hope it won't be to late.....when he turns the EBJD won't have a chance! They are by far the fastest, strongest most explosive fish I have owned when attacking. My Rican turned into a hell raiser around this size.

He is between 5-6" eyeball. It's a male for sure. I'll post some updates in a month or so and you will see without a doubt. I think from pics and videos the head and body shape is the best way to tell from the 2-5" mark although I have been burned on here once before. In person you get a much better point of view with the lighting and such. If your watching 5 or so grow up together you can pick out the dominate male and a female by the time they are 3" IME. It's worked for me twice
