Dovii Thoughts~Help Requested

I say go for it.Chances are by the time he eventually out grows the 150g(if he does,not every fish grows to max size no matter what conditions they are kept in) you will be all to happy to arrange a tank with a 24" foot print.You still have plenty of time for this.
Just don't be surprised if he kills the other tankmates.

They top out at 18 inches because they aren't being kept in nearly enough water.

Even ones in larger tanks 50k gallons, etc don't get much larger than that in the first few years. 18-19" is the norm you usually see. Largest I've seen maybe 20"/21"? And one that size was in a 120g. lol I think any dovii that gets anywhere close to 30" is a very old fish.

So are you suggesting that shortened life spans are acceptable? Or is it you are saying no one has been able to keep a dovii to "term" in the several decades they've been kept?

If a fish isn't reaching its potential something is wrong with its environment.

No he clearly said that they don't get that big in 2-3 years no matter what environment. He never said shortened life spans are acceptable, but rather slowed growth as age increases.

I'm saying when you read max sizes on fishbase and some other pages no one knows how old that fish is they used for measurements. There are some fish that reach their printed max size no problem in a couple years, while others seemingly you never see near the max size printed everywhere which leads me to believe some max sizes listed for some species are very old fish.

Sure a gator gar can get to 10ft but how old is it? You're talking decades upon decades old. Sure a pima can get 15' probably but how old is a fish that big. Fish can live for a very long time in the wild.

I have never seen a captive raised dovii over 22" or so. I mean measured with a tape measure, no guesstimations. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I take it as being not the norm at least for fish a couple years old. My point was that rather than room being the reason we see most dovii no larger than 20" or so is time to grow, not lack of space. Because even those with large space and some with seemingly unlimited space aren't much larger/same sized.

I guess I'll have to start beng a little more literal in my comments so I don't confuse anyone...

These fish didn't just start being kept in the last two or three years..... Where are all the big fish?

FEMALE, but don't worry if size is what your're looking for I have seen one get 18" to 20" although it took 5+ years in 1,000 plus gallons. The real question is what your intentions are. I think that like dogs, a certain type or breed, will choose you.
That is, if circumstances allow you to run into a particular species or breed and if your personalities match then its love, ooh ohh sweet love!!!

Dovii's and gamebred pitbulls for life, don't ask me about anything else!
