I think everyone has some very valid points on tank space and time it takes to grow out of a tank, those pictures of the wild dovii are awsome buy the way.Im sure if nuth88 still has the dovii 15 yrs down the road and is pushing 20+ inches he will upgrade to a giant size tank to make him happy.

Good point, but it won't take 15 years (more like half that).

I guess my point is most people won't be so responsible.

Seriously though, the fish you mention is listed at 22" by the owner (and that was a while ago). Also, that fish has pretty advanced HITH. I hesitate to point that out as I don't want to be overly critical, but the size of the tank isn't all that matters. You'd have to do a water, food, and habitat analysis to identify the quality of any environment, big or small.

My point is good luck finding one larger, or max sized in home aquaria.. I already told you they don't exist but you call people out to prove to you that there are uber large dovii or even decent sized dovii and if they don't then they did something wrong. There are plenty 18" dovii, a couple 20" and a little over.. none uber huge close to 30"..

Even dovii in the greatest care/water quality don't get near as big as the max sizes close to 30" you're seeking. You have no concept that a dovii that big is probably a very old fish, how long most keepers keep fish or why a wild fish would be larger than a captive fish.

Reality escapes you.

I'm done trying to explain. Good Night.

Beyond all that unless you own a uber large dovii how do you know? Otherwise you'd prove your own inquiry..

I hate to keep pounding the same point, I just don't think you guys have the right picture of a fully grown dovii. Plus, in spite of the numerous claims otherwise, I don't believe that there are more than a handful of large fish in the country right now. I challenge anyone to post a picture of their 20" dovii (with the notable exception of a certain person!!!). Heck, I'll settle for a verifiable 18"...... No takers?

Have any of you guys ever tried to measure a live fully grown dovii? If you have, you know you'll never try again!

Only a handful of people have shown the skill and commitment necessary to allow these fish to reach their full potential. Show me a picture of something like this in a home aquarium:

I doubt anyone will be able to meet my challenge, but I really hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see it!
I love how people have to show wild caught specimens to show thier size potentail.God knows how old those fish are?We are talking about aquarium raised fish so the pics shown are of no real value. You answered your own question.Quote"Show me a picture of something like this in a home aquarium, I doubt anyone will be able to meet my challenge"end quote. This is the point. Most Dovii in aquaria will never obtain these sizes. The odd few might but most will not.:)

With every response, you hammer home my point -- all the while missing it yourself. Show me the "plenty" of 18"+ dovii.

You say I "have no concept that a dovii that big is probably a very old fish, how long most keepers keep fish or why a wild fish would be larger than a captive fish." I think my very point is YOU and those like you don't have that concept. I've kept cichlids for over three decades.

What about your comment about how long people keep their fish. Where do those fish go? Did they even live long enough to require someone to make a decision about their future?

Sorry, I gave my last uber dovii to a friend last fall. Perhaps he'll post pics. If you look around the net enough, you'll find some older shots.

Actually, most captive cichlids attain much larger sizes that their wild counterparts. That is commonly known, and I'm surprised you don't know that. The greater availability of food and the absence of predators are the main contributing factors. However, the inability to provide a suitable environment for the very large species almost always results in the early death of those fish. Whether it is poor diet, poor water quality, or simply the stress of an overly confined existence, the large species almost always fall prey to bacterial or viral infections.

You are correct. Most dovii will never obtain their full size in a home aquarium. Where you are wrong, though, is in your reasoning behind that statement. The story is the same with Pacu, Arapaima, RTC's and all the other fish guys like you promote...... operator error!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, turns out my Male is a female and the original owner (not kev) was mislead or did mislead. How do I know for sure? The eggs allover the back rockwork........SIGH, She is rejoining the Dovii Clan that Kev's got built up, and Im going back to my Cuans. But that is a good thing for me, and the fish. Winners Everywhere!
