Dragon Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a BW fish. Probably get eaten by big cichlids.

i really injoyed ur post ur mite have convinced me to get one of these guys :)

I have one! He is the sweetest little fish ever. I have him, right now, ina 20 gallon tank. (he will get a biggger tank when he needs it. He sleeps most of the day, but when you turn the lights out, he goes crazy! swims to the top, twirls around in circles, chases the bubbles. I have 4 khuli loaches. They are ALWAYS by his side. I have actually seen one of the loaches take food that was stuck on one of his teeth. He didnt even budge. The only thing i can say is he is SUPER DESTRUCTIVE towards my plants. I finally just took them out because he will literally go to the bottom and grab ahold of the plant and shake it around until it is uprooted. So he doesnt get plants anymore. No matter how much i anchor...he digs up..lol
I also have him in with a sucker fish...I forget the technical name, but he is a little guy...they called him a bulldog sucker fish at my LFS. And lastly, a spotted pictus catfish. A small one.

I would highly recommend one. I thought for sure I would have to take him back dead to walkmart before my 3 day "guaruntee" was up, but I got him to start eating and gaining weight. Since I have had him. (3 months) He has grown about an inch longer and is a lot fatter.

hope this helps!

Hmmm... sounds like with the kuli loaches, he isn't in BW?

My son saw these at petsmart and walmart last night, and really liked em. I've got a 20 gallon tall set up full marine right now with just about nothing in it. Just a bull minnow, and he's probably gonna visit the gullet of my white catfish. I was thinking of converting this tank to brackish, with maybe an archer as a tankmate. I know that the dragon will outgrow the tank, but does anybody have any data on growth rates for these? I will be able to upgrade the tank, but not for a while. Don't want to get a few if their just gonna outgrow the 20 in a few weeks.

The foot-long archer will also outgrow that tank.

Sigh, I guess this is what this site is developing into, huh. A post that contains no pertinent or relevant data to the question.
I know that the archer will outgrow that tank. I also know that the dragon gobie will to. The question was more along the lines of, how much time would I have before it does outgrow the tank.

I got my guy at about 8 inches and he's about a year and a half now at 13-14 inches . He was in a 30 gallon for a few months, but I moved him to our 75 gallon. His home is a gravel vac extension and he is always in there. You would have some time I would think, since most that are sold in stores are about 4-5 inches and skinny, this guy was abnormally large for the shipment. We just got another one to join him later. He's currently growing out in a smaller tank. Already about 7 inches. :)

Looks like I'd better just go ahead and build the full size tank. I was going for a mangrove thing, dragon fish, scats, monos, archers and mudskippers. I havn't really researched the fish yet, I just think that would be cool. I've got a piece of 3/8 acrylic, cut into a circle about 4' in diameter. I was gonna build a cube tank, about 4.5', fill it halfway with a 18' wide land area running across the back, mangrove trees and maybe some java fern. Should be pretty cool when done. I'll get it built, and then acquire the livestock. I don't think th dragons would be happy for long in the 20.
