Driftwood Shedding?

Hey guys,

I added a second piece of driftwood in my tank a few months ago and noticed that it since it sank it seems to be shedding a dust on my aquarium floor. It started a a light layer but it does seem to be very noticeably - should I take the piece out and scrub it or ditch the piece entirely?

Any assistance or advice you could share is greatly appreciated!

Yeah I had the same problem. Softer woods have a tendency to do that. I just point a powerhead or spare filter motor at the substrate to blow it away. Bottom feeders (geophagus in my case) also help get rid of it.

+1 it just happens with softer woods. I am not a fan of it, just took a big piece of soft wood out of my tank because it had too much particles coming off it.

Do you have any Plecos in the tank? They eat wood, and leave a lot of dust as they chomp away, so some soft wood is good for their digestion.
Some cichlids also grind away on wood leaving debris.
