I have 3 tanks with Malaysian driftwood with pieces as large as 32"LX24"H and they can leach for a very long time. I always know when my purigen needs a recharge... Most of my driftwood no longer leaches however I notice a difference in my water quality so I continue to use it. I have bags in HOBs as well as canisters and both seem to work just as well.
You can buy Purigen in bags(100mg) but I prefer to use my own as you get a better recharge. Make sure you use a very fine bag, it will slip though the ones found at Petsmart. Seachem makes a micron bag for it, called "the bag". I use a generic 200 micron bags.
I've never seen it at the chain retailers so you may have to go local. Easiest is probably online.
