DRIP SYSTEMS Success & Failures

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how often do you gravel vac? and do you filter the water and return it to the sump or toss it?

For my system I gravel vac every couple months. I should do it more but I'm lazy. I also toss the water. I have a T fitting off my main drain line that I run my python hose into so the gravel vac water goes out of the house with out using a bucket. Thats a +1 for the larger drain. Makes gravel vacuuming just a little bit easier.

Your system is really well thought out!!

I gravel vac only when needed which isn't too often with a bunch of geos and a ray constantly stirring up the bottom.

Thanks! Most of it was rework, not planed lol. I already had the drain for water changes because I can't stand running a hose out the front door and the 450 was my first large tank so I was thinking I would need 3 or 4 pythons to do a water change. The drain was installed before the tank had water. A year after the tank was up and running I heard about this trickle system.......then more tanks were added. Now you guys think I know what I'm doing, trust me this is 100% MFK. I love this site :headbang2

Nice setups guys. I wish I could do this but my tanks are upstairs. I would have to do some serious drilling to get the water in and out and the piping would be hard to hide. One thing I would recommend on the gravity fed overflows is to put some kind of strainer on the end because if something clogs that up you will have a big mess on your hands

You could always box in a corner of the room with a bulkhead and hide most of the piping behind that. Use it to run the drains down into the lower floor, and bring the water pipe up as well. Just a suggestion :).

Awesome Thread. I actually am debating on doing this or not. I am in the process of setting up a central filtration system. I would have about 1000 to 1500 gallons plumbed all together. I am debating on having the auto water drip into the sump or into each tank. Any thoughts?

How is this affecting everyone's water bill? Temperature of tanks?

i would drip into the tanks, clean water where you want it. and drain from the sump, excess dirty water goes out.

i have a well so no change inwater bill. i was dripping to fast and it caused my tank temp to drop down to 70degrees. i just turned the drip rate down and the temp came back up.
