I also support the theory that DE is from injury when sliver Aros jump and bump into the cover.
I raised all my previous silver Aros in my 1000G. The tank's cover is 1 ft or more from the water level, so it is not easy to bump into. None of them got DE, the largest one grew to 20".
I now have 3 silvers, ranging from 14" to 17", they were kept in 1000G and didn't get DE. I moved then to the 180G a few months ago. There is only a few inches space between the water and the cover. They are frequently spooked and their way to escape from predator is to leap out of the water, so they frequently bump into the tank cover. Two months ago I noticed the largest one got DE suddenly on one side. The tissue that held the eyeb to the head on the upper edge was clearly stretched and wounded. It was looking down badly. And all this happened over night.
Now the wound has long healed. His DE got a little better, but it is still apparent.

Well, I think I just captured the evidence that wound can cause DE.
I was trying to move all 3 silver aros to my another tank, the one that had almost recovered from DE jumped again and it hit the tank brace very hard, then it lifted and landed on the carpet. The eye was damaged it can be clearly seen that it was pushed away from the eye socket a bit, the white tissue can be seen. And it is looking downward badly. I don't think it will ever recover from this wound. This individual is particular jumpy, sometimes it would jump when it detects a slight movement outside the tank. Luckily I still have the other 2 DE free.
