Drop Eye = genetics or consequence?

i think it's normal. maybe it aids in hunting?

If it were normal then they would just naturally have downcast eyes and this wouldn't be a topic of discussion at all.

Most of the people who've posted so far appear to believe that it's either going to be 100% genetic or 100% environmental. The truth is, it could be a complex combination of many factors, both genetic and environmental, as is usually the case.

I come back a point I have said before silvers have a massive gene pool compared to Asian aros

If silver breeders have a genetic problem like drop they could and fish new breeding stock from the wild an option Asian aro breeds don't have

Who know what starts drop but any ideas that people come up with people are very fast to say no that's not it

Do a DNA test on a few silvers with and without drop eye 1 to see how closely they are related

the LFS's i visited(visited all of them, cause they are all within the same street), none of the juvies, mid range, full adults suffered from DE. None of the LFS's in mainland China, also including the restaurants that housed silver arowana's. None suffered from DE.

you would be surprised that the dna tests on asians show that there is also a very decent variation in the gene pool in rivers.
we take decent genes and subject the fish to non natural conditions when we tank them.
if a fish in the wild rarely gets the condition, then you would not see an elimination of it due to natural selection kind processes.
if the fish in the wild rarely gets it, and some in tanks only might get it, and some in tanks might get an injury that brings it on, then you can hardly start a breeding program to remove it unless you could proof there was and differentiate between the genes for that condition.

i have not noticed any evidence or heresay either, that for example, f7s are more likely to get it than f2s and there is no reason to think that wild caught silvers have a susceptibility because of an inherited gene problem. rather the position and working of their eyes is not conducive to them being held in tanks without their chances of developing it increasing.

nor have i heard that it is something like a hip problem that can be inherited in dogs that are inbred. if this kind of thing were the case, people, more so farmers would already have been claiming not to buy fish from non reputable farms because of drop eye in particular. on top of that, farmers that have never bred from drop eyed fish would be laying claim that their offspring do not develop drop eye.
what you do see is breeders suggesting what can be done to avoid it by way of keeping the species.
we should be able to take a fish, and either force drop eye on it or have it live all its life without drop eye and that should be the case with their descendants.

I think the style you keep the aro in plays a big part with drop eye

1. Feeding if you dump loads of food in at feeding time and the aro needs to take food from the bottom this is not good
a aro in the wild would only eat food as soon as it hits the water or even above the water a aro in the wild would never eat food from the floor as it wouldn't get a chance as other fish would eat it 1st

False.

if what i have said is false you must be the man we are all looking for who knows the real reason they get drop eye please share :naughty:

I never said that. You are stating that wild arowana never eat from the bottom of the river and that is completely false.

Have you any pictures of silver aros eating from the floor in the wild
Why would they bother when they have plenty of food on the water surface

We give aros crystal clear water in a tank which they don't get in the wild

Not necessarily. I personally have always fed floating pellets, and when I do feed meat (and that is VERY rarely), it has never actually reached the bottom and yet my arowana has drop eye.
