drop eye

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Drop Eye(DE) is believed to be a genetic problem that causes the Arowana's Eyes to slant out, making it look like it's looking down. Many believe that it could be these factors that cause DE:

-Feeding Fatty Foods
-Feeding Foods that sink to the bottom of the tank
-Having a bottom that is bare allowing it to constantly look at it's reflection

Some keepers suggest to keep it in a Pond were all sides are covered and the only place to look is up. This is believed to force the Aro to look up and slowly recoup from DE.

But IMO, it is Genetic, and if it's in it's bloodline, it will get it. For example Silver Arowanas all tend to get this condition. Is it a coincidence? Prorably not, most likely the parentage of the Silvers all suffer from this condition. Black Aros for example are not likely to getting this condition, why is this? Most of them are wild caught or there not farmed nearly as long as Silver Arowanas have been farmed. DE also never appears in Jardinis because they are also either wild caught or not farmed as long as it's cousin. Asian Aros also seldomly get this.

when i made my tank bb my aro kept looking down and swimming to it
(the reflection)

stick your frickin head in the tank and look at the bottom and see if you see your reflection. I supose you think the aro can see it's reflection in the side glass too? How about the surface water? No there is no reflection in any of these, what you are seeing is an optical illusion.

If you refer to this sticky, the author(Delgado) clears this myth.

here's something for you to think about you freke lol, how do you know arowanas in the wild DON'T get DE? have you gone swimming with wild aros to verify that they do NOT get it?

stop questioning life about there posture, it happens. and for over 30 years of the fish being in the hobby everyone has always wondered. they've performed surgery for reasons i don't understand. they fish must be so uncomfortable and possibility of him losing his eye sight or maybe even dying. not worth the risk if u ask me. i love all my aros, all 3 of my silver arowanas HAVE DE and 1 has DE in BOTH eyes, i still love them more then ever.

only fish i own that doesn't have it is my leichardti, but lets see how long that last.

but on a serious note, i always thought of it as a survival evolvement. he has tankmates below him at all times in a home tank, and the tank is so small he would have to kinda keep an eye on them to make sure he's safe. so over time his eye slowly starts to look down in a form like now he can see up, and down lol
Check out the pic of a wild caught silver in the link below... No drop eye

It's not the feeding cause drop eyes. In the wild, they mostly look up, to watch for their prey, and sometime food, but mainly watching for their prey... Guess who or where's their prey in the tank... You, your kids, your other pets that wandering around the tank, thus, eyes looking down... Also, if you don't keep your temperature high enough, it will cause drop eyes, too... And yes, they cut and remove the fat... It's either muscle, bone, or empty tissue in your body... and those empty tissue either stores water or fat... Just accept it... Stop questioning.... Take it easy on your life

It's not because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there... Did you see oxygen, yet, you breathing it? Pull your freaking head out of the tank and think for a second... You may be blind, but not other

This is the best argument you can make? oxygen?:screwy:

Believe what you will, use whatever remedies you like, the end result...silver aros in the home aquaria do and will get DE.

oxygen and a reflection are 2 different possible elements in life LOL

that is the weirdest arguement i ever heard of.

seriously as stated many different ways, DE happens, PERIOD.

and the pic of that wild aro is 1 out of billions in the wild. how can you justify that the billions of wild silvers out there DO NOT have it just because the 1 that has been posted doesn't? and what if it has it in the other eye? lol

thats also still a small silver that just couldnt have developed DE yet. and you said exactly what i was going to say "DE happens", plain and simple.

DUH!!! Didn't I already said it in Post #7 Page #1?? :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL: :screwy: :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL: :screwy: :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

You can NOT do anything to prevent drop eye from a silver arowana that is kept in captivity.. Not even in the pond... Only wild silver arowana that I've seen without drop eye
