im sorry I didnt mean to start such a fuss! lol i have gravel on bottom and I dont give him feeders so both those myths are busted. I think its just a genetic problem. I have no problem with it hes beautufull just the same. I wish he had it in both eyes though so he will at least match! Thanks anyway guys. Hey if anybody ever finds out exactly what causes de please post it.

I personally find that my aros always chase after reflections of food items floating by from the sides of the tank. This I think is due to how you have the lighting though. I have a bare bottom tank and have never seen my aros do anything to the reflection off the bottom. As far as I know, there is no reflection off the bottom.

I have a new theory however. When you see pictures of various fish taken from their watery homes, you can see that many have a case of the distinct "dropped eye" look. This is true for many species of fish. I'm a pretty hardcore angler, so I know. All the fish I take out of the water to remove the lure, tend to show this dropped eye look. Even in the aquarium, when you remove different fish, they always tend to look down when out of the water. This tends to be more evident in fish with larger eyes though.

My theory is that it has to do with pressure. When underneath the surface, the pressure of the surrounding water keeps the eye in place. Once the pressure is gone or not present, then the eye tends to hang out a little more. Over time, the eye of some fish evolved to rely on the pressure to keep the eye in place.

I am in no ways an expert, but perhaps something about living in an aquarium with different water pressure has to do with this? My theory is probably whack!

im with teh pressure idea, as i fish constantly and also see the same effect. even when i took my big barramundi out of the tank to transfer them, there eyes drooped.

and sry i didnt realize this was such an old post as it was a link from another thread
