Hi there I have researched drop eye in Arowana as I've just got my 12" Black Arowana & I've found that it's caused by the fish constantly looking down all the time so it can be helped by either floating a brightly coloured ping pong ball on the surface to keep the fish occupied or I've been using freeze dried meal worms.

falcore is absolutly right, i have seen many japanese aquariums have ping pong balls to have the fish constantly looking up to strethen the eye socket. it is simmilar to lazy eye in humans . place floating plants or bamboo to allow them to focus upwards

falcore as stated before your black will almost certainly never develope drop eye, no matter what. there are thousands of silver aro keepers on this site and there are proboably 10 threads a month on this subject, if ping pong balls worked none of our aro's would have drop eye.

I was not saying that if you float things on the surface that it will cure or eradicate drop eye. Only help or help to prevent this problem other wise why would so many Japanese tanks do it?

might be worth a try.

This is not likely to work, once the silber aros are familiar with the ping pong balls or what ever items are placed they will ignor them anyhow. Something more likely to work would be some lilly pads, with an ever present food supply on top of them. If the aros are searching the top surface for the possibiltiy of finding food this would have a better chance of working. I did this with my silver when it was younger, but with large silvers the space that is needed to do this makes it unlikely for most home aquaria.

The best thing to provide is very large tanks to keep collisions at a minimum. This is what I believe is a large contributing factor of DE to silver aros.

well, it is not that it is a miracle cure or anything , as the fish adds it to part of there daily rouitine they will asume it and stop focusing on it. unfortunatly in a closed controled habitat the sceanary dose become bland and the fish will always look down at the action. in the wild the aro is always hunting looking up down and all around. it is a common issue in demestocated aro's
