One of my silver aros, which I raised from a fry and was never fed and feeder goldfish or other "fatty foods". It made it to 18" with no signs of DE. While transferin for on tank to another the arowana went crazy slamming itself into the side of the tank several times. Within hours of being place in the new tank the DE was present in it's right eye.
Four to five months later the aro was about 23" and in a 180g tank with another 25" silver. While cleaning the tank both aros became spooked and trashed throughout the tank. Later that evening it was appearent that the silver now had DE in it's left eye also. There is no doubt in my mind that the repeated head trauma that silvers experience while being kept in tanks leads to DE.
, the pond thing was pretty funny though

because he was going to outgrow my 125 gal and my parents (in my opinion) were mean and wouldn't let me upgrade to a bigger tank (when they said they would let mectoychik;2610099; said:For the head injury and DE there seems certainly a correlation, though i must say that one of the silver aro that i have developed DE very gradually. First the eyes were bulging then it slowly started to resemble DE. I can't attribute DE in my aro (only one out of three silver have it - not that severe yet) to injury cause i have never seen it bang out the tank - it does dart sometimes.
I donot feed my aros goldfish. Fry from fish farm in the past (cichilids, catfish etc), but now i feed frozen prawns, frozen crickets and hikari floating pellets (frogs sometimes) - so i don't think it is fatty food either
