Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well some recent ones as i finally got my tanks setup again!

Dropped the 12g when moving it, need a new quarantine.
Put about 4 times as much aquasafe into 55g as needed
put about 5 times too much stress coat into 2g, not on purpose but the betta is very healthy now.
No carbon for 55g, basement smelled horribly due to new ammonia and cycling, now i have some carbon in there.
I bought aquaclear filters, they are violently loud

Probably will have more to come! Some of these i dread happening to me

Had one just yesterday. Not sure how much of it from being dumb.

I've cut my w/c on my 20gal rubbermaid down to every other day(same with feeding). On Sunday I changed about 40% and washed out the filter for the fountain pump. After everything was back up and running everything seemed(looked) ok. Yesterday I went out there to find only 3-4 inches of water in it (about 3 gallons). It seems with the filtter cleaned the pump was strong enough to push the water up to a hole at the top.

It appears one rosey red bit it. It was pushed up and got stuck on the ledge(dried up). The rest appeared ok.

dropped a light into my tank, DID get electrocuted:shocked: nothing compared to horse fence though:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:, tried to keep a spider crab alive for a 2 day drive home:(:screwy:, 2 gal with guppy fry, no w/c for 3 months, no food for 1.5 moonths, stunted their growth, didnt cycle about 10 tanks, etc. etc. etc.

tried to buy the cheap equipment to save money several times, worked out maybe 5% of the time.

I did this and lost both of my 20 gallon planted tanks. I had them hooked to a sump, and the sump set to over flow into a drain. Started the water change forgot about it for around 18 hours. No water spilled or ruined my carpet but both tanks had total genocide from the chlorine

I had this problem with my tank in the back porch of my house shoot to 91 degrees in the depth of summer, I tried everything floating 1 gallon bottles of water in the sump. My wife diligently kept bottles froze and replacing them while i was at work. the best we could do was 88 - 89 for about 3 days. All the fish survived. I have since dismantled the tank and moved it to the climate controlled basement.

The funny thing is you helped alot in advice in setting up this tank in my back porch, how fun is it that we have similar stories with different causes.
lol the world is a strange place isnt it ?! too weird :screwy:

I think I said my dumbest thing I have done was join this site... I still stand by that... but heres a good one to add to dumbest things I have done in this hobby.

Drove 1.5 hours in the middle of a snow storm to pick up some fish, one the way back was passing a semi and my truck began to fish tail (no weight in the back wasn't planning on driving in inclimate wether just yet). Just as I passed the truck the fish tailing turned into me spinning around multiple times right in front of the semi, everytime I made a complete rotation I saw the headlights getting closer. The semi luckily was able to veer around me, I spun off the side of the road hit a guard rail bounced off facing the right directions. Some scratches on my bumper but otherwise Im alright!!

when i was a noob i put 3 oscars in 55 un cycled tank, was doing 100 percent water changes feeding them only gold fish amazingly they all grew to 10 to 12 inches before i learned what i was doing was wrong.now i only have 1 oscar in a 100 gal.

more recently i droped a rock in my pond and brokethe heater but didnt notice later when i saw my fish floating i grabed one with my hands and got electricuted
