Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gave away my L-25 scarlet pleco! This takes the cake as this pleco was 12 inches. Try and find one now thanks to the ban.

Over the years I have done so many dumb things it would be hard to put a finger on. Within the last week I tried putting 190 gallons into a 180 gallon tank when I was testing it's ability to hold water lol. And that is just the most recent of many small overfills and a couple very large ones on other tanks.

been there.... and the older I get the more regular the occurance. Seems like almost weekly now. :D

I stuck the hose in my 110 gallon tank that's in my garage. Told myself to remember to turn it off and of coarse I forgot. An hour later my whole garage and everything in it was flooded. water was even coming out the front door and down the drive way. good thing the hose wasn't turned up too high.

I did this and lost both of my 20 gallon planted tanks. I had them hooked to a sump, and the sump set to over flow into a drain. Started the water change forgot about it for around 18 hours. No water spilled or ruined my carpet but both tanks had total genocide from the chlorine

I once tried to lower my PH using top fin chemicals.

Cross contaminated a tank with ick with a show tank (Used a python on both tanks within like 15 minutes of each other)

And most recently not noticing my stealth heater had broken and shot the temp on my 90 gallon tank to 91 degrees for approximately 24 hours maybe slightly more. Luckily it was a bichir only tank and they were alright.... Wish they had an indicator light.

Even more recently in an immature revenge move I returned the aforementioned heater to marineland with some year old dead cichlids in my freezer attached to the heater with rubber bands. They show they have not received it yet lol. I hope the Fedex guys did not throw it out.

I had this problem with my tank in the back porch of my house shoot to 91 degrees in the depth of summer, I tried everything floating 1 gallon bottles of water in the sump. My wife diligently kept bottles froze and replacing them while i was at work. the best we could do was 88 - 89 for about 3 days. All the fish survived. I have since dismantled the tank and moved it to the climate controlled basement.

The funny thing is you helped alot in advice in setting up this tank in my back porch, how fun is it that we have similar stories with different causes.

When my 12+ inch golden sharks knocked loose my center brace in my 190, I drove to the LFS to ask advice if I should drain the tank and fix it... instead of just draining it right away... as I arrived back at the house to find only 30 gallons left in the tank.

2nd one: Just 2 months ago after buying an index pool, I placed it on an unlevel ground and filled it, then bought and put fish in it. Even though it was holding, it looked bad so I drained it and am trying to level the ground... meanwhile the fish (20) goldfish and rosey reds and 2 3inch Koi are stuffed in a 20gal rubbermaid

I remember when I was small.... I was trying to net the fish and I squeezed a guppy with my net and I put it in tap water! :( it died...

I have a rule with my tanks now. If you are drinking you stay away from the damn tank. When I first got my Oscar fish I had her in a 30 gallon in my room. Well one day I was showing off and I dropped the hood and ling in the tank reached in and pulled it out of the water, set it up only, said wow is could have been electrocuted, and then proceeded to drop it in the tank again, and reached in to pull it out again.

setup a long inlet for my 100g without an air check line. power outage, 30 extra gals ont he floor.

This did not happen to me how ever it is still amusing. I was working in a pet store and a customer came in complaining all there fish had died. After talking with them i learned they had over feed there fish so they put a couple of alka zeltzer in there tank. They told me that when they eat to much that they take alka zeltzer and it helped them and thought it would help the fish feel better
