Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my zebra pleco [so damn expensive for a tiny little fellow] got caught in those really clear [almost invisible] strings in the wood which is used to tie the plants onto the wood and i thought my zebra was just wiggling cauz he was itchy [lol] and left him like that for a few hours before my dad came and noticed the clear string suffocating him. my poor zebra's gills were red. he could have almost died and there would have gone 300$!!!! ;P

I have left hoses filling the tanks and forgotten them, soaking rooms.
I have drop lights in the water and grabbed without switching off power first.
My first ever heater, an old coil one with a copper screw adjuster inside a long glass tube with a rubber plug at the top. Stuck a screwdriver in couldn't quite get in the screw slit so I tried a finger adjustment and boom, saw stars-it was 220V.

did the overflow while doing major w/c

didn't QT when adding new fish to my new juvie discus tank (this was big time stupid is as stupid does!)

left little opening in canopy, my 6" bala did a sky rocket out & alas is in fish heaven now!

while feeding late at nite, left frozen brine/blood worm pack out & it thawed & all over the floor!

bought a baby whale & teamed it with my red tiger oscar. needless to say also went to fish heaven!

after cleaning my fluval several times, it started to backwash out lots of crud when I started to prime/pump. realized it was all stuck in the coiled intake/return tubes. needless to say this went the CL way!

while traveling on business cross country, stopped in a pet shop that had great prices/sales. bought 25 fish in LA to travel home but still had stops to make in SF & Chicago. needless to say 20% went to fish heaven but the others survived! all still in their original bag/water! not proud/not bragging!

when doing major w/c, forgot to add prime, next morning lost most all of my precious silver $ bloodfin & red tail & baby bala sharks. but all my baby albino cory's plecos & large bala survived! again not proud/not bragging!

bought a cute 4" baby pacu to be a companion with my silver $ in just a 20g tank. it grew so fast & ate so much it was a terror! needless to say it went the way of my kid's classmate's dad's 55gal tank. still alive & growing! now 13"!!

I think that's enough of my dumb moves!

got a 3+ inch baby TSN that i assumed my 4+inch ornate polyp would leave alone...:nono:

Over-filled about 5 gallons into my living room a few weeks ago when filling up my 55g, because I was too busy watching the fish in my 125g. One time in college when I was moving my tank, I took the heater out and set it on top of my computer. Would have been fine except that I forgot to unplug the heater. The heater and computer both still work, but the computer has a pretty good burn/melt mark on it.

i for got to do my wc for 2 months went on vaccation..... gross water

second day of owning my very first little five gallon I put a bunch of gold gouramis in it amd tetras (way too much for a small uncycled tank) the next morning the tank was cloudy (ammonia) so to clear it up I put bleach in it, then wondered why my fish died in less than five minutes. Needless to say I looked like an ass when I called the pet store. lol But that didn't stop me. I have owned a tank ever since.
