Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
unknowingly fed my africans moist krill everyday. they all died of bloat. a very very expensive mistake.

my kid last year took her dirty diaper off while i was using the bathroom and put it in my fish tank.

she had gone both #2 and 1...needless to say i spent a while cleaning that up :(

before i got into the hobby and while drunk one night i told a kid he had tempered glass on his tank that "It wouldnt break if you hit it only chip" that

"It was made not to shatter"

i was wrong...we had to get his neighbor to rush us and his fish that we bucketed up to a friend of his to save the fish...needless to say i had to buy him a new 55 gallon

Years back i Kept a larger Pacu in a 90 gallon tank, till he broke the end glass darting around probaby cuz of bad water conditions. He got about 22 inches,I really believed he would only grow to the size of the tank..

Once I put my Snake in my 30g to see if captive-bred Snakes can swim. Apparently they can quite well. No one was hurt, but I would not do it again.

This wasnt me but last week my friend's puffer fish died and he said "oh well I guess I'll just put my other fish in this tank" He forgot that his puffer lived pretty salty water the "other" fish werent very happy with him.

Well I thought it was neat to hand feed my lion fish. I'd hold live guppies by the tail and dip them in the water and he'd snatch them away. This started because my two triggers (yes they lived peacefully together) would get to the guppies first every time if I just threw them in. The lion got me one day, it's a bit worse then a bee sting.

LMAO

Move my Bullhead cat by hand, He bit me (ouch), and then I succefully grabbed him.......Hand full of spines, (Bigger Ouch).

i forgot to do a water change following some medication and killed my black ghost knife :(

thought tiger barbs would be fine with a 6"-ish green severum. 5 were whittled down to 2 in a day.

figured a puffer fish would be a great addition to a community tank (i'll also thank an ignorant sales clerk for that one)

killed an elephant nose bacause i didn't read medication warnings until AFTER treating the tank...

separated cannister filter hoses without closing the valves first. water went all over the power barfor the tank. shocked myself repeatedly trying to shut it off AND keep more water from gushing everywhere.

and the grand finale was today: stacked rocks in my new 93 gal which were knocked over and smashed the glass. sigh...

Would have to be this:

My 'wabi-kusa paludarium'. 60x45x15cm/24x18x6", filtered by a home made external canister filter with built in heater, planted with local natives. It was very pleasant, very pretty, made the fish very interactive and accessible, was a nice feature to have in the room, but it was mostly good at killing fish.

2 guppies died from what I assumed to have been bacterial infections, 2 bumblebee gobies died of possibly the same thing or they may have been one of the types that prefers brackish water, a bristlenose, an empire gudgeon and 2 bettas jumped to their death, found a 3rd betta in time.
It's now in my backyard breeding mosquitoes and growing algae.
