Dwarf pike wallecei

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That female is definitely not a Cr. wallacii. (Wetspot always mispells the name for some reason).

Looks like you scored the sp. 'orinico dwarf' instead. The Cr. wallacii I've had from Colombia (twice) had orange rimmed dorsal spots, not red. Plus they don't have the stripes in the dorsal either. Right now, 3 different dwarves are coming out of Colombia that are all labeled Cr. wallacii - The colombian Cr. wallacii, sp. the 'orinico dwarf', and the relatively speaking new sp. 'Inirida dwarf'.

My Inirida female doesn't show any dorsal spots at all, nor do the females I've seen in the one or two other pics online I've seen. I sent the picture of my female to Vinny Kutty and Wayne Leibel, neither had seen this particular dwarf before. The fact yours has the spot plus the bars in the dorsal is why I'd lean more sp. 'Orinico dwarf' than either Cr. Wallacii or sp. 'Inirida dwarf.'

I have only seen breeding reports for Cr. regani, Cr. compressiceps, and Cr. notophthalmus before thus far. I'd treat yours like Cr. notophthalmus though.

PS: Sorry for the rambling and repeating myself, coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Hey Darth what do you think this lil one is i bought it from Wetspot about a month ago he labeled "wallecei" what do you this it is? Also what do you think male or female?

He just emailed back and said he was working on pictures. He said the picture in the original post of this thread is very similar, his are just smaller and haven't filled out yet. He also mentioned the picture of Crenicichla Orinoco in the Pike Aqualog is "not far off" from what he's got. I don't have the Pike Aqualog, though. Is that a book/poster?

It's a German book series, I think softcover but am not 100% ... really detailed but I never bought them since I always assumed they were in German and my attempts at other languages fails miserably.

From your description, I'd guess his are Orinico dwarves ... especially if he thought they look like noto's. Supposedly the only difference between the orinico's and the noto's is the lack of extended dorsal fins in the males.

Definitely a female, but the shots aren't good enough for me to get a good read on the dorsal pattern. The first shot has the dorsal extended enough, just out of focus. Believe me, I know how camera shy they are. My only good shot came when I was completely across the room with all the lights off using a cam-corder to zoom in.

I'm wondering then.. the two have begun attacking the other fish in the tank and also do a strange dance where each of the swims up and then acts lifeless while falling down in front of the other. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, usually acting in concert to attack other fish means they are pairing, but I've never seen the lifeless falling you describe in any of the 5 dwarf species I've kept.

Yes- I would say that explains both of their full bellys. I think time will inevitably tell. I did get one other in the purchase that was definitely a male- sold him though- and I'm going to order 6 more to see what those look like. I'm pretty sure it's a mix of sever different dwarfs.

It also seems that the dorsal patterns come in later on some species than others. I think it was clgkag that had what I would have sworn was Cr. wallacii based on the dorsal pattern of the females turn into orinico dwarves later on. Really strange. And yes, I've bought 2 different dwarves personally as Cr. wallacii from Wetspot, and seen at least a third species in others. Could be more out there too. No one is really looking at the wallacii-group complex scientifically, so we just have to kind of muddle through it.

Yep it was me and I believe they are sp. orinico dwarves now too. That whole little group is confusing as all get out as juvies.

just to let you know the wet spot has males and females right now, i just bought a mixed group yesterday. you have to look really hard and chose the right ones but they are there

Yes, but are they actually Cr. wallacii this time or more orinico dwarves ... or something else? ;)

I think they are more orinocos, not really sure though I should probablly get a pic up of them. I've only had them three days though so they are not colored up yet. I clearly have two females and one male though

Not without a good pic of the female dorsal extended, sorrry. The other differences are practically nonexistant. They look good though and should enjoy slipping through all those java fern leaves though.

Getting dorsal shots is a pita on these little guys by the way.
