Are they that good of a resource to cichlids diet wise? I have seen a lot of posts about people feeding earthworms, I had no clue!

In my opinion they are absolutely the best food possible for larger fish. I have fed them as a principal food (supplemented with prawns, cockles, mussels etc) to RTC, P.perruno, H.wyckii, B. tigrinum, Jaguars, Oscars, Arowana and various Snakeheads over the last 30 years. They are cheap (or free if you have a garden and can be bothered), obviously they are live, whether fed whole or chopped for smaller fish, and they are disease free. The fact they are live and disease free is of particular use to aquarists trying to wean predators off feeder fish. To "purge" them I put a small amount of grass in a litre plastic carton, this gets rid of all the earth within them in 24-48 hours. If you want to cultivate them easier in a garden place a 2 foot square piece of heavy sacking material (hessian) with crushed eggs shell, used tea bags or leaves, and ripe pieces of fruit and vegetables under it, around a half inch layer accross (not tons of stuff). After a week or so bedding in you should be able to go out and simply lift your sacking and collect them on demand. Wish we had the facility here in Scotland that Nuth 88 mentioned, that would be great. Also, I see the guys from USA frequently mentioning "nightcrawlers", what are they?

And I never have had a bad one from the machine!

Nightcrawlers are just a thicker Earthworm......

Maybe someone else has a more scientific explanation!

Biology
Nightcrawlers are a type of earthworm. They are highly beneficial because they aerate soil, allowing water and oxygen to penetrate more easily into the ground. Their feeding and excrement helps recycle nutrients and fertilize the soil. Nightcrawlers also feed on thatch, a layer of live and dead plant material that can accumulate at the soil surface and reduce the penetration of water and fertilizer.
