drdrewr your terminology of how you describe the tank is very familiar to how another member posted, forget name, are you a reaccuring member?

No. I am quite new here and had not posted on this or any other fish-related forum before. I've posted in other forums on boxing and linux development, but, not much else -- and -- even that was quite some time ago.

I guess some other poster is out there somewhere "bitin my style"!!!

One question....how do you accomodate 12' of tubing? I guess I can't visualize it. 12'? Thats a LOT of substrate, and heavy?

The 12 feet of tubing was easy enough. It is the default length that Home Depot sold. It was the 5/8 variety, which is what the Eheim 2228 uses, natively. It was a pain stuffing that Efisubstrat (not the "Pro", but, the original) into it -- only to replace the Efisubstrat with deNitrate a week later!!! The hose was not heavy at all.

It was working beautifully until it clogged. In the height of +90 degree summer temperatures, and, without air-conditioning, I just no longer have what it takes to see this through. I have no doubt that, with some minor adjustments, I could have made this work, but, that is now irrelevant.

Overall, I think the concept was good, but, my implementation would require several rounds of fine-tuning. I should have started this experiment in October!!!

No. The water changes are easy enough to do and only takes about 20 minutes. I have an outtake with a tap on the end of it. It is right next to the window, so, I just open the tap for about 10 minutes or so and can drain about 30 - 40% of the water out. I add prime directly to the tank and fill with a garden hose. About 20 minutes total. This helps alot, but before Purigen, I would still have high nitrates because my tank is overstocked (at least I think this is why).

Purigen was never about not doing maintenance. I use it to eliminate my problem with nitrates. I try to change the water "EVERY" week, but, sometimes I just don't have the energy to do so. Here, also, Purigen gives me a cushion when I miss a week for whatever reason. The reactors make it so much more effective than when I had it in my cannisters, plus, my kids think it just looks so cool!!!
