Easy to find natives?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I heard of this one that I saw from Bottomfeeder that was common in golf courses, small, and black and white. I you (BF) stop by this thread, what is it?

If you don't mind buying online you have a number of options. The vendors' section at http://forum.nanfa.org features folks who specialize in selling natives. Another good vendor is Sachs (www.aquaculturestore.com).

With natives it's always important to check your state regs first.

As far as which fish you should keep, tell us more about the size tank you have and what kind of setup you want (a few big predators, a schooler community, planted, stream, etc).

I would say a regular ole bluegill and large/smallmouth bass is the the most common. I would never in a million years think of paying for them though.

He claimed it was banded killifish but it doesnt look like it.

We still need more info. What size tank, planted or not, and so on. It would also help to know what state you are in and whether you want to collect fish or want to buy them.

Sorry, I don't have the info to give you.

At least an idea. It doesn't have to be exact.

If you have a giant tank, bigger than 300 gallons, you can think about keeping native monsters like gar, bowfin, big cats, pike, large suckers, etc.

If you have a big tank, 150-300, you can think about gamefish like black bass and walleye. If not, forget those guys.

Moderate-sized tank, 65-125, is great for a group of large panfish such as bluegill and other sunfish, rock bass, perch, crappie, bullheads, etc.

Typical tanks, 29-55, are good for smaller sunfish, large minnows, pickerel, mudminnows, etc.

Small tanks, 10-20, are good for smaller minnows and dace, darters, killifish, madtoms, etc. Of course all these can be kept in larger numbers in bigger tanks as well.

Nano tanks, less than 10 gallons, can be used for certain small killifish and darters, and pygmy sunfish.
