ebay substrate= 120lbs black sand shipped for 75bucks???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought 100lbs of that a few months ago. It seems fine to me. Not as dark as I hoped though.

here is the info from their website:
Weight = 25 lbs.
Size = 1/20" [0.70 - 2.00 mm]
Shape = Round
Chemistry = Quartz, Granite, Feldspar
Physical Form = Solid
Texture = Coarse
Specific Gravity = 2.70 [Water =1]
Birthplace = Corona, California

so either the seller is just lying or you guys have no clue what you're talking about.

Not really...

There is someone selling substrates on ebay for really good prices. A 20lb bag at my lfs is 23bucks for black sand. ...

The OP has the choice of buying it from his LFS, eBay, or from a welding/sandblasting supply. He has an equal chance of not getting natural black sand from either source. However, from the welding/sandblasting shop, he at least knows what is in the bag.

Screw decuctive reasoning, we're just a munch of clueless morons.

Corona, CA has no beaches so the sand isn't from the beach.
I haven't seen any beach here in So-Cal that has black sand unless you go into Mexico.

I will have some pics up in a bit. Man this guy is fast. 120lbs arrived in 2 days and i paid for the auction at 7pm on the first day. It is not regular sand i can tell you that. And it does not stick to a magnet, so it has no iron contents. And also it does not discolor the water. It is alot larger than regular sand from a lfs. I would call it a nano gravel. LOL ----picks up in a bit.

I don't think any black sand in Mexico started out being black. :nilly:

The color reminds me of flat black paint. It is black but not a deep deep black. I let the cup set for a about a hour and it may have discolored the water very slightly. But I like it better than sand for sure. My biggest problem with sand was the floating clumps that you get when new and this stuff sink right away. i will put another pic up after it gets in the tank. In a few days. Got 3 boxes at 45lbs each. So I got 15lbs for free.

Awsome. I'm glad you didn't get stuck with some inferior stuff. Now send a sample to a lab so the rest of us know what to look for. :grinyes:
