Yea his color could still get darker. Mine was pretty light when he was younger too. Try the emerald entree frozen food or some algae wafers mixed in his diet. Also like other have mention is give him some hiding spaces. Their color really changes when stressed so maybe that has something to do with it.

How can I put spirulina in his diet? Would I feed him a spirulina pellet, or a pellet that has spirulina mixed in with other ingredients?

Every good fish food on the market has spirulina in it now. Hikari, NLS, Southern Delight, Xtreme, etc all have spirulina as part of their formulas. If you want pure spirulina, Ken's Fish offers pure spirulina powder and pure spirulina flakes.

It takes very little spirulina in a fishes diet to enhance the color blue, approx 2-3% is enough. Personally I would change its diet, cichlid gold contains too much terrestrial based plant matter, and no aquatic based plant matter such as spirulina, kelp, etc. You would be better off feeding NLS, Northfin, Omega, etc.
