Cichlid formula would work fine, probably just a 1mm pellet at the size of your fish. Time to start weaning him on to some higher quality foods.
Is the large fish formula ok too? It's a 3 mm pellet. I think the 1mm is too small and cichlid formula only comes in the 1mm size.
Ok so as far as substrate. Does it really play a role? I have seen multiple videos of ebjd in tanks with substrate that's light like mine and they are pretty blue.
So does the substrate really play a role in the color? Or could it just be that my ebjd just won't color up?
Substrate color, background color, lighting, diet, and genetics all play a role in the overall coloration of fish. Your substrate is fine for EBJD. Many years ago I kept one with light sand, and a black background, and he had fantastic coloration. Relax and enjoy your fish, it should improve as it matures.
