How fast do EBJD's grow? I got a juvie from Jeff Rapps a couple of months ago and he doesn't seem to have grown much. I have him in a 20 gallon grow out tank, and have been feeding him NLS pellets as well as frozen food. He's about 3 inches and has maybe grown 1/2 inch since I got him. Any input is appreciated :)

I've heard they are not the fastest growers. Also they are prone to intestinal paracites which can slow grow as they take the nutrients from the food.

Good luck with him, they are one of my fave fish but I can't seem to keep em alive.

i havent had one but from other threads on this that have been posted alot of people have varying experiences some say slow some say just as fast as reg jd, make sure yours doesnt have parasites but other than that just keep his water really clean and he will fill in, in his own time.

Mine seems to have grown 1/2" in length in just over 3 weeks.

i havent had any success with them, the ones I had were very slow growing, but i guess it varies just keep the tank clean warm and a good diet he should start to grow a little more noticable now. thats what mine did he grew slow til he was about 3 to 3.5 then he got to 5 pretty quick. good luck with yours they are one of my favorites, I just dont have any luck with them but they are gorgeous fish for sure

Having raised a handful of them to full adulthood... and talked with a lot of others as they grew theirs out...

I believe they grow at the same rate as a Standard Dempseys... but when they are ill their growth rates slow considerably...

They are prone to parasitic illness until they reach sexual maturity. I personally use UV lights to prevent the threat, others treat with Jungle Parasite Clear (or similar product) when sign of parasitice infection (white stringy poop) appear.

I have a couple....power fed them and do freq. wc. I think its like any other fish the more they eat the faster they grow.

I have a roughly two and a half inch ebjd in a 30 gallon tank. He has no other fish that will bother him in there. Just some loachesl oach tetras and catfish that kind their own business. He had stringy white poop and would shimy and shake like 8 to ten times. I used some prazi pro and he is good and healthy now and popping healthy. I've had him for 50 days today and he's grown maybe half an inch. I had the water at 84 degrees by mistake and didn't know this until I put a thermometer in. Apparently you can't always go by what you have the thermometer set to... Anyway, I'm thinking about growing him another 4 months with the goal of 4 inches long Aug 1. Today is April first. So anyway, the thing that surprisingly is not addressed often in people talking about the ebjd growth speed, is increasing temps to speed the fish grown. Now my larger 90 gallon is my American ciclid tank. I'm waiting for the ebjd to get to about 4 inches before I see him with the chocolate ciclid and the green terror in the 90. I want to decrease the temp to 80 in the 90 gallon. It is currently 86, didn't know this till now. The fish are happy, Healy and beautiful...I want to turn this to 80 and I'm wondering what people opinions are on this... Running the 90 gallon at 80 degrees while having the 30 gallon at 84 degrees to speed up the ebjd while keeping the 90 degree slowed down so they are closer to the same size in 4 months. So in doing this, hop warm could I have the water in the 30 gallon to grow the ebjd to his fastest possible speed? I'm thinking 86 could be done, nob maybe risky. He was gone at 84 and I may increase to that. Anyone have any experience or know what an ebjd can handle for a few months of higher temps and not cause ill Heath?

Mine seem to be growing fairly slow. Especially my runt.

I got mine December 2017, so less than 4 months. They were 1.5 inches when I got them and now they are pushing the 3 inch mark.

I don’t think they even look 3 inch’s but they are bc I measured them today.
