I saw a nice EBJD at my LFS yesterday. It was about 4 inches long and they were selling it for $130. I would love to have an EBJD, but I have never wanted to buy the juvies because I hear they are so fragile. I didn't feel justified spending $130 on the larger one though. What do you guys think? Is it worth it?

$130 are too expensive for EBJD.

$50-75 is the max I'd pay for one, and my town is overpriced for fish.

That is a little steep. Try finding a local breeder, they're a lot more reasonable with pricing. If i go to a breeder near me, juvies are $15 each and they're good quality. They might even have some left over adults that didn't pair up, which they might let go pretty reasonably.

4" Blue Dempseys for sale are a rare find... Therefore it becomes a sellers market...

Most people will recommend getting a small group and growing them out to get a nice one... this will cost you $100~150. If your lucky you end up with more than one... if your unlucky you don't end up with any...

Spending the $130, you are buying a fish that is likely past it's stage where it is susceptible to parasitic infection... and you have a good idea what it's body shape will look like as an adult. I've found that by this size deformities have become apparent, although coloration can continue to change considerably.

That is a little more than I would sell a 4” Blue Dempsey for… but if you really want one… and you really like the one that they are selling… you might not ever find a local opportunity to buy one that size again… Also the few adults I’ve seen sell online have sold for over $100 plus shipping...

Its worth it if its what you want and if you feel like you are over the hump of having to worry about it being so "fragile".

In SoCal, you probably have a better selection of LFS and fish than I do, which is why I order online mostly. If I were to include shipping cost on my fish, Ive paid that for a single fish and was happy to, just to have the exact one I wanted.

WAYYYYY to expensive. You live in Socal, im sure you can find a better price. For $130.00 i can but 3-4 EBJDs in Bay Area. Good luck

But these will be juvi fish that have not yet outgrown the stage of being prone to parasitic infection...

Therefore there is a much higher risk invovled... You may end up with a couple nice ones... may end up with one nice one... may end up with 3~4 dead ones...
