EBJD... Is it worth this much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe if its still there after I get paid in 2 weeks, I'll take a pic, post it up here, and you guys can let me know what you think of it. I have never owned JD's before, so I am no expert when it comes to body shape, coloring, and what makes a nice specimen. I bought my male rotkeil for $100. I felt like that was way to expensive, but I had been looking for one for a really long time and couldn't find one, so it was worth it to me, know what I mean? If you guys think that this EBJD is a very nice fish, I might consider the extra $$$ worth it.

No! Way too much. at 4" no more than $50 imo. but if that's what you really want it's totaly up to you. It comes down to what your willing to spend. Caveat Emptor!

While that seems a little steep, its not unreasonable. As nutcase mentioned, its a sellers market at that size, I've never even seen them at that size at the LFS around here. They only sell the juvies 2" or smaller, and they're not cheap. I got both of my EBJD at 1" for $85 total. The other store in town was getting a shipment in the next week and theyres were slightly (but not by much) cheaper. I didn't want to wait, and the 2 I bought had been in the LFS for a month, so I got those.

I don't think you'll find too many 4" EBJDs for $50...

1-2 inch EBJD's around here are $40 each. I have seen some at $30, but they weren't nice specimens. I do have a tank to grow them out in, so maybe a group of juvies would be a better option.

Question: I have heard they are less aggressive than regular JD's. It would be going in with my severum with is a total coward when he's put with aggressive fish. Do you guys think an EBJD would be peaceful enough to be housed with a severum, blue acara, and keyholes?

Every EB is different I have ones that will kick the **** out of Reg JDs. When we group moderately aggressive Cichlids together it can go any way. You just have to try them out and see. You will have better luck if you grow them together as juvies. And I have seen some Sevs turn real mean at the 7" mark

Yup, my sev is about 7 inches and he's got a funny personality. He is fine with other cichlids that are peaceful once he gets used to them, but for the first couple of weeks, he tends to pick on them a lot. But if I add an aggressive fish to the mix, he turns into such a baby. I had a salvini in the tank with him, and for the first week he tormented the poor salvini, but after about a week, the salvini snapped and stood up to him, and my sev was hiding in the corner of the tank, got totally stressed out, and refused to eat. Maybe if I grow out a group of EBJD's and add one to his tank when its 3-4 inches, they'll settle the dominance thing before the EBJD is big enough to do any damage. Hopefully I'll be able to choose a more docile one.

i bought mine for $30 and he was around 3-4 inch..so $130 too much in my opinion. Unfortunlty he ran into the side of the tank and passed away.

nutcase hit the nail on the head. 1-1.5" specimens will go for around $50-$70. I think $130 isn't a bad price for that size EBJD honestly. Especially if it has good coloration and a decent body shape.
