I see a lot of conflicting opions about the Electric Blue Dempsey on the net. Can I get some MFK thoughts on these fish, Pro or Con.

heres reasons why i like/dislike ebjd i dont own them so idk how there attitude is.
good
1. very nice colors

bad
1. crazy expensive
2. weaker than normal JD

Agreed, the LFS has some, but I am not paying $30 for a 1" fish that may or maynot last 3 months.

I have never had any luck with them. I had some 2 or 3 years ago in a 33L with perfect water parameters. They lasted about 3-4 months and died. Very few cichlids I grow out die for no reason.
As I said this was a few years back so they may have gotten hardier?

I'm not quit sure what your asking because you didn't say what the conflicting information is. I have 1 6inch male and have had zero issues and mine is less aggressive then normal JD's. I have had zero trouble and have a few friends that have them that have had zero trouble with them.
Buy them from a good source and you won't have any trouble. They do grow extremely slow, that is the only con I have.

I spent the last two years stressing over this little guy. Always thinking I will wake up to find him dead. Always making sure the other fish are not picking on him (and if one did, that fish was gone). Always clean water and good food.
I think he will live a full life now. Maybe it was just luck but I do not think I would do it again.

They are expensive, and be prepared for deaths. The best thing is to get them at 3"+ but i havent seen them offered at that size anywhere.

Couple years ago I purchased two at 1.25", both died after two months.
Then i purchased two as 2.5", I had both up to about 6" and got rid of as they were not good quality for breeding.
Last september I purchased 5 1" blues at $20 bucks a pop. I have three left at around 2" and growing out to see how they will look, the other two died within the first 3 months.

You can follow there growth and updates here.
