If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone attempting to raise young Blue Dempseys... get a UV light...

whats the reason for the uv light?

It's a uv sterilizer. It helps to reduce bacterial, etc problems. Young ebjds are vulnerable to a variety of ailments; if you can get them to the 4" mark, they tend to be as hardy as most other fish. The uv sterilizer helps.

i think they are a morph as well. i mean if they are hybrid, what are they hybrid with? they look exactly like JD just blue.

Blue Dempseys are prone to parasitic illnesses... UV lights kill parasites...

Most people I know loose about 1 out of 4 juvis to parasitic issues... using UV lights I've lost far more due to intraspecies aggression than anything else...

PS - I've always thought/said/heard it was parasitic... but it could very well be bacterial...

thanks nc. i just started working part time at my lfs, its sad tho because the owner already like me more than most of the people there. i think im gonna try and talk him into ordering a few. the only down side is there gonna run me 50 each, but i might be able to talk him into 20 each.

you can find them online cheaper... I'm not producing any currently but I expect to be offering 5" very healthy males for $50... I paid $10 per fish shipping included for my last group...

I'm convince they're a color morph also. Great fish, just have to buy from a reputable source. Here's a pic of mine.

I wish mine would have been able to reach this size. Both of them were killed and eaten by my 5" jaguar.

I happened to read an article yesterday about ebjd (I can't seem to find the link at the moment) but supposedly this variation of jd occurs naturally. According to what I read it said the way you can breed these things is to breed a female jd with a male ebjd, raise the fry and then breed a blue female offspring with the original blue male.

THey also said these fish tend to be less aggressive than normal jd.

I just got one, an im leaning towards color morph, as everything ive read says there timid compared to reg JDs an the 1 I have is a lil terror just like every norn JD ive ever kept.

Gorgeous fish though.
