I'm bored this morning so I'm
gonna start a few threads... I had a big 8" gorgeous ebjd I had from .5" that nudged his was out of his temporary tank and died.. It was extremely disapointing but I did end up getting another... New guy is about 2" doing good right now he's in a divided 30 gal with 4 small synspila that he really wants to beat up lol... My question about ebjd is keeping them 100% healthy... My original one and this new one will scrape their bodies sometimes (about 10 times total in 24 hours)... This nee one and my
original both were and are very active, colorful, and eat well... New one has been through parasite and bacteria treatment, and the water is always 6.5-6.8 ph and nitrate 20-40... Curious as to why he is scraping becuase overall his health seems good, as did my original... Also he eats spirulina brine and when he does scrape himself it's his face area (same place my original scraped also).. Ebjd experts Please chime in... Ps. I have great pics but I can't upload them cuz I use my iPhone for eveything and there's no picture upload

Does the EBJD have ich? They will scrape or "itch" themselves at times if they have ich. Search ich in google and see if the pics looks like your EBJD does.

Does it look like he's banging his mouth on things? Mine do this from time to time after they eat, as if they're trying to knock some food loose. After a couple of bangs they usually stop.

yeah sounds a bit like ich if he is itching his sides, also 20-40 nitrates is a bit high, you should try to keep it below 20 in order to keep them as healthy as possible, if it is ich then i would up the temp to like 85-86 and add a teaspoon of salt per gallon a day for 2 days so you have 2tsp per gallon and then leave it for AT LEAST a week (better to leave it this way for 2 weeks to be sure), but yeah if you got one ebjd to 8" then you should do fine with this guy GOOD LUCK

Lol yeah I'm aware of what ich is it's def not ich, nor any noticeable disease... He scrapes his head only, not entire body... Either the bottm of his jaw or he'll fli upside down and scrape the top his face like nose/forehead area... I thought it strange because my old one did the same thing with the same parts of his face, maybe it's the nitrates never really being below 20.. Do you think it's better to do water changes evey 2 days instead of once a week to reduce nitrates? I ask because I only have tap water so in not sure it's health to change 10 of 30 gallons every 48 hours?

Could be the on set of Ich, just not visable yet as the cysts haven't formed it's just the parasite boring into it's flesh, or the water parameters are not to it's liking Ph, nitrates, nitrites ect. Do a large water change 50 to 75% up the temp and treat with salt as mentened above by the lovely Sara88. This should help either way. I am kind of split 50/50 right now between it being the water or early signs of Ich. Let us know how you make out, GL.

The chances of it being ich is prob 0%... Any other parasite of bacteria is a very slim
chance cuz I treated the tank he was in a couple weeks ago.... Like I said you can see him scraping his face a total of about 10 times in 24 hours... No real spazzing out just itching himself... I guess it's the nitrates stay around nitrite ammonia always at 0 ph between 7-7.2... Should I start doing water changes evey 48 hours??? The prob is only have tap if that's good to use so often... Thanks for the help everybody... Oh and he acts completly normal begs for food and is always active

Go ahead and do your water change. Be sure to use a dechlorinator of some type. You should also test the water comming out of your tap with an accurate test kit so you have some base line as to what your putting in the tank. If all is well you should get on a regular 50% weekly w/c schedule. Hopefully everything will be fine from here on out. Be sure to clean your filter once a month (do not over clean that's just as bad) if you have two filters running alternate cleannings to maintane sufficent bacterial levels.

Hey i think you may be confused with my experience level... Right now all my 120 and 180 gal are empty because my basement is being remodeled, so I currently have 6 tanks between 20-40... It sucks btw... So anyways I have always done weekly 50% water changes... This tank only has a tetra ex45 and whisper 20 because it's really prob lightest stocked tank with 4 synspilium and ye one ebjd... Tao ph is always flat 7 and no detectable ammonia, and I use aquasafe about 50% more than directed... Thta why i'm trying to figure out why he scratches like my previous when eeythinf seems to be normal including his overall health... Anyways thank for your help I appreciate your suggestions
