Oh btw my old one that did the same scratching was is an 40 gal by himself with a 2217 on it and nitrates never getting above 10 but he still did it anyways

I didn't mean to offend you. You asked the question and I tried to answer and help you to the best of my abilty. It's all good still buds, sorry I couldn't have been more help to you.

Oh no I'm not offended at all, and I'm sure there's a ton of stuff you know more about than me for sure... I just didn't want you to think I was a begginne to avoid confusion that's all... I def appreciate you and everyone going out of your way to make owning fish more enjoyable and understandable

yeah i would go ahead and do waterchange, im on tap as well and when i was raising festae fry i was doing 50% waterchanges every other day and they were fine, its not a problem as long as your tap pH is the same as your tank pH and your not using like a pH balancer or anything, also does that aquasafe stuff protect against chloramines as well or just chlorine? i use prime as my dechlorinator as it gets rid of chlorine, chloramines and any ammonia that might be in your tap. since its something they both did then im thinking its probably something to do with your tap water but yeah if the nitrates climb above 20 within the week then you should do more than just 1 weekly water change to try and keep it below that, GOOD LUCK

Mine does this, but also my BGJD's, Red Dragon Flowerhorn and my Convicts I've seen do it as well. It's usually after they eat, which I'm guessing they're banging to dislodge food or break it up so they can eat it easier. The way said fish hoss the food when I feed em, it's no real surprise that it'd get stuck sometimes. Crazy things.
