Just purchased this cute little guy last night. I was told he's an electric blue, but I kind of thought he'd be a lot bluer... My water quality is really good, except the pH is a maybe a little high, 7.5. Is he just not going to be that blue? Or is it newness and/or pH do you think?

Thanks!

Since EBJDs are a line bred JD, there are infinite possibilities for variations, depending on how much culling the breeder does before releasing them to the public..
I don't think a pH of 7.5 for natural JDs is high, the waters they come from in the Yucatan are often limestone/ancient coral bed sink holes where pH can easy rise above 8.00.
Similar to the one in the video below just north of Tulum, some of those lime stone boulders are 6ft across.

Where did you get it from? He could just be stressed out, but had you not mentioned it was an EBJD, I would not have pegged it as such.

Thanks! So do you think he'll get more brilliant as he gets older? Or is he just one of the duller variations?

Imo I think 7.5ph is adequate, most all cichlids coloration will change drastically from juvi to full grown, give him some time, I'm sure he will be a nice looking j/d with proper care, looks like a hansom bloke already, I like the red on top of dorsal fin,,,

See, that is what I thought - i paid $50 to (i think? ) a reputable store that assured me he was an electric blue - I'm wondering if i got taken... :/ He seems super healthy and such a nice personality - he and my gold severum seem to actually enjoy each other so I'm keeping him. I was just disappointed when i got home and looked online at other very bright electric blues!

Looks normal to me. I'm calling it right now that she's a blue gene that didn't get taken out of the actual EBJD batch. She's looks like she'd be a stunner nonetheless.

On a side note, you might want to go back and demand a partial refund if she turns out "normal".

Not sure if its a EBJD, but give it a few more days till you can be sure.

Either way it is a stunning fish and if it is already showing personality that is fantastic (especially if it is a EBJD) as many of them are quite shy and reclusive.
but as Audaxcity stated, if it is turns out to be a regular blue JD, go get a partial refund.

Electric blues do NOT show well over lightly colored substrate. It dulls out their colors.

That does seem to be pretty pale. I would bet this will end up being a high blue phase of a "normal" jd, as stated above.
