EBJDxBGJD Spawn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well...some unfortunate news. I'm pretty sure most of the eggs were infertile this first time around. Seems like most have began turning white and it seems they might have been pecking them off throughout the day. Definitely will update when I know for sure.

Sorry to hear that Ben. But depending on the size of the batch, even if only 20% are good that will be a good number of fry. Just keep a close eye on them & hope for the best.

I do believe that moving the eggs like you wanted to do is a good idea. Just make sure you replace the clay pot with an identical one. They'll spawn again for you in about 2x weeks.

Jill,

Thanks, I think for the first time since corresponding with you I can say "great minds think a like!"...Thanks to you I'm finally on the right track I think?! First thing I did when I got home today and saw the situation was remove the eggs and replace with another pot. Pretty sure none of the remaining eggs are fertile but that's okay(I guess) and I'll still wait a couple days before discarding them and see if I have any miracle wigglers! And hopefully like you said, they'll spawn again in a couple weeks and hopefully get it right this time. There was alot going on in the tank this time.

Thanks again Jill,
I'll keep you updated!
-Ben

Sadly there were only about 15-20 eggs left when I got home and removed them, and I don't think any are fertile. There are maybe a handful that are still clearish? (Sorry not sure of the proper wordage to describe fertile eggs) Hoping at this point that it was the male that didn't fertilize properly? A female wouldn't lay eggs if she was " infertile" correct?

Sorry for the bad news,

Hi Ben,
I'm sorry to hear about this batch. But it's not uncommon for the first few batches to go bad. I'm pretty sure the next one will a good one.

Now there is a chance your female is infertile, but I doubt it. Most likely the male didn't do his part. So to answer your question above (YES) infertile females can lay eggs.

Hey Jill,

Thanks, although I can't get a decent picture for the life of me, there are maybe 7-10 eggs that haven't turned white yet! Woohoo! Possibly my first EBJD fry still! Definitely not holding my breath though. But I'm assuming if they are fertile they should hatch by tomorrow or the next day right? It's been so long since I've had a spawn I can't remember! But anywho...if those 7-10 hatch that means my female is fertile right? Which is good! Then it's just a matter of them getting it right the next time! I'll try to get a pic of the eggs and keep you updated. Anything you would suggest doing to prepare for the next spawn? (I know the first thing that you'll say is clear the decor but I REALLY don't wanna have to do that yet. Lol)

Thanks always for all your help Jill!

Alright got a pretty good pic...and I know...sadly this is pretty much all that was left. But you can kinda see some of the eggs are still clearish. What are your thoughts?

Hi Ben,
BensEggs.jpg
It looks like your female is fertile. So hopefully with the next batch the male does his job properly. Congrats on the few you have left. hopefully there's at least one EBJD in there. ;)
and
If not, you'll get some in the next spawn. Only suggestion I have for you right now is feed them well & do a 20% WC daily.
- Jill :)

Thanks again Jill, and on the bright side, if I do have any EBJD'S, separating will be a piece of cake right!? Lol
