Eco Bio Block

Hey guys,

I've been thinking of picking up fish keeping and putting a fish tank in my office. This post intrigued me because I'm looking for a very low maintenance method since it's in my real estate office.

I found this thing called the zero water exchange filter kit where it says you never have to change your water again and uses a under gravel filter.

they have articles on there site saying it's based on fish farming aqua culture technology in Taiwan.

the website is hiq-usa.com it says it's guaranteed or your money back.
Im thinking of getting one this seems a little more legit than just a stone you through in the water.

What do you guys think

Thanks

Adamn

wow bacteria rock and no water change filters i'm in

No such thing. You MUST do weekly water changes to remove toxins. No way around it--no magic stone.

I disagree

although realistically in the long run water changes are needed to retain important nutrients it is always possible to remove toxins without a water change. Its just very costly and not practical (atleast yet) for fish keeping.

If you ran A giant fast acting RO on your tank...would it have toxins?

:grinno:

and just for the record its not magic

Its science :D

but I will admit that in reality water changes are by far the most practical solution

This is just a reverse UGF with added Bio-filtering and from what I read ...air powered. (shades of 1960's batman).

If you read the maintenance, it's easier to just get a HOB (Hang On Back) filter (aquaclear AC 110) or a canister filter (a better choice for your circumstances).

Do a little searching around here and see what others are using.

Dr Joe,

The zero water exchange kit comes with a power filter, i believe it's http://hiq-usa.com/120_Gallon_Eco_Magic_Filtration_System.asp this thing that enables no water changes. The power filter seems to be the only difference between the zero water change kit and the eco magic.

I think im going to get it. It says guaranteed or your money back so if it doesn't ill just return it. I'll let you guys know. Now the fun part is to de
decide what fish to get! =)

Thanks,
-A

its nothing but an overpriced UGF really

it even says "Nitrates are also removed by the natural actions of live plants"

So it sounds inorder to keep low nitrates you need plants which many of us have found to be true but to an extreme extent as you need a TON of plants per fish to actually do anything. Plus those cartridges need to be replaced every other week!?!

I havent replaced anything in my Aquaclears in years and even if I did I could refill the whole filter for $1 with scubbies from the dollar store.

IMO its a waste of money and your water quality will be bad within a week and continue to get worse for however long you avoid water changes.

PS: Water is almost free...the "Clean Magic Packs" cost $9 for two :screwy:

You don't need to replace anything in your Aqua Clears but you do need to replace the water in your aquarium.

And as for "Nitrates are also removed by the natural actions of live plants", well the work "also" is in there it never says you "need" live plants for the kit to work.

I got one so I'll post up some pictures and let you guys know how it works. I think it's going to be fine, considering that the same technology is used for fish farming...

With all due respect, your assertion that this system is "nothing more than an overpriced UGF" is false. This is a unique filtration system because the two biological towers contain both high and low oxygen bacterial cultivation media - so whereas in traditional filters like your Aquaclear the Nitrogen Cycle is managed to the point of nitrite-nitrate conversion, the anoxic substrate contained in the towers colonizes low dissolved oxygen bacteria which breaks nitrate down into gaseous nitrogen properties that dissipate upon contact with the open air/water surface. This process is reinforced by the kinetics of the reverse-flow water current - the UGF system, so to speak. Also, your characterization of "the work" being that plants are needed is false. We encourage customers to use live plants because they complement the denitrification process, not because the system won't work without them. On the mechanical/chemical side, there is no more maintenance or expense involved with this system than any brand power filter, including the Aquaclear. Carbon & zeolite get exhuasted and therefore must be replaced - theres no scheme going on here.
