And also Hendre Hendre did you place a black cover or something behind the tank? The wall behind mine is white so...?

So for an external flash I could keep the tank light on top switched in right? And what do you mean “the camera flash off the ceiling to trigger it”?
Yes. External flashes rely on the cameras flash to activate, so I point a flash on the camera towards the roof. This creates enough light to trigger the flashes on the tank, but not create a reflection on the outside that would spoil the photo.

I set it up like this

Hendre Hendre i tried what you said but it didn’t work. I had switched on the tank light on top and used flash(but from the phone). Also there were any obstacles behind the fish.

It won't work well from a phone unfortunately. The technical details of the shot call for a digital camera

If you do, give us a shout. Even old cameras can take awesome photos, this for example was a 2007 camera, an older lens, and an even older focus ring:5_10_2020-109.JPG

Um.. Hendre Hendre I tried it with a digital camera as you said, the pics were obviously better than from the phone but no black background. Should I put some black cover behind the tank for it? Or are there separate settings in the camera for that?

I use stock Canon digital Rebel with flash, mostly using the Portrait mode, either auto, or manuel focus.
The camera needs to be pointed slightly downward to avoid reflection.
Tanks lights on, or sun. Although sun is tricky.
A black background helps these type shots, I tape a styrofoam panel spray painted black to the back of the tank
Glass should be very clean, outside and inside the tank (algae easily ruins shots).

For very small fish, I add a micro ring lens

I usually take about 100 shots at a sitting and if I end up keeping 2, I consider that successful.
I have never been able to get a decent shot with a phone.
