Educating MFK on Africans!

Okay again, mixing tangs and malawi are a bad idea....

Aulonocara Golden Peacock
Aulonocara steveni
Aulonocara stuartgranti sp. "Cobue"
Aulonocara masoni

will cross breed if females are present, so male only... add these plus a few more males and you are done!

Altolamprologus Calvus - Pearly White tang does not go with above or below...

*Cynotilapia afra (Blue with Black Stripes & a Yellow Fin)
Labidochromis caeruleus - Eletric Yellow
Labidochromis Perlmutt

mbuna can all mix together, but not good with peacocks or tangs

Hi can you point me the direction of a good thread concerning keeping Psuedothopheus Demasoni please

use search feature to the right on the screen....

Again I agree =] If you like the aulonocara - then do a show tank with them only. Dont breed them unless its a species only aulonocara tank (as in one type of aulonocara only). Otherwise I would agree with all males. Males will also have much more color.

If you do the afra or labs, these are Mbuna and I wouldnt mix them with peacocks. Mbuna need to be kept with Mbuna only as they are very agressive.

Calvus dont do at all with any of those fish as it is a tang and shouldnt be mixed with the Malawis.

I will try to get the profiles up soon, but I cant get to it tonight.

Is this true? If so why did you tell me to do a Peacock only tank?
Can I have more than 1 male Peacock in my 55?

Peacock cichlids should not be mixed together in aquariums.
One of the peacocks will become dominant in the aquarium and the others will never show their colors.

Yes you can have more then 1 male peacock in a peacock tank and while yes one will become dominant they are colorfull reguardless, unless someone stress him out - but it comes back. I had 3 males in a tank once and not one lost its color and you can keep more then one speices.

If you do a species only peacock tank then you can do males and females. Females are the ones that are not very colorfull. Again make sure it is a specific species of peacock.

The reason I am telling you not to mix peacock species if you get male and females is because they breed easy and will cross breed. If those hybrid peacocks get out into the fish world - it is highly frowned upon and there will be angry fish hobbiest.

The males will not show color if they are really low on the pecking order and look a lot like the dominate one. I have mixed males and they show their color... at times it will fade when they are bummed, but comes back always!
