most lfs can't tell the difference.. and the M. Dayii are the rarer species. worth growing them up.. they aren't called black leopard eels w/out reason.

A better picture with clean glass would be helpful. All I can tell from this pic is that it is something in the Mastacembelus genus (dayi could be correct, but then again, so could armatus or favus, imo, based on the pic).

I believe they are call black spotted eel also. They are related to the tire track but have a more pointed head.

I've never noticed a difference in head shape. The major difference is that M. dayi have spots rather than zig zags/chain link patterns.

a clean picture of the tail should do it... M dayi have a noticable tail. but the tan top line.. and the faded/stressed markings are very farmilular to me. if anything I've noticed the smaller sex ( males i'm assumeing) have smaller pointy heads in all spineys.

Okay, ill post some better pics tomorrow. My friend bought a 5 incher from the same tank and they look and act completely different

Is the line shaped differently or something in M. dayi? Becuase my M. armatus used to get the same pale stripe occasionally when he was younger.
