do the lampreys that spend their whole lives in freshwater die after spawning as well?

There are actually many lamprey species that are native to the Great Lakes region. You are talking about a particular species, sea lampreys.

I was thinking the sea lampreys had made their way into the Great Lakes by way of the St. Lawrence.

edit: They came through the Welland canal.

they are hideous.... can you eat these eels, cuz Lampreys are delicious..

Youre sick. How could u eat that... haha i just dont like fish or seafood yet, gross eels, AKA bloodsuckers.

The lamprey i caught was in a pond, about 50 miles from the ocean.

Recipe for eel or lamprey.
Clean eel or lamprey, place in bucket of cold salted water and soak for at least 4 hrs.
Drain and rinse well
Place in boiling salted water for 15 minutes (for eel instead of lamprey cook for 20 minutes)
Remove lamprey from water, drain, and cool enough to handle.
Cut into chunks about 1 1/2" thick
Melt butter in heavy frying pan and add spices (5 oz butter, 1/2 tsp ground clove, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1/2 tsp marjoram, 1/2 tsp sweet basil.)
Fry lamprey chunks 5 minutes on each side over medium heat ( a little longer if it is eel)
Set fish aside in covered dish
Add 2 cups of semi-dry white wine to frying pan then reduce to 1 cup stiring to incorporated spices and drippings to make sauce.
Adust flavoring to taste with salt and pepper
Serve with fresh white bread and spoon over with sauce

i have only eaten lamprey (friggen delicious), i was wondering if the "lake eels" were good to eat, people i know just catch em n throw them in the woods

Both lampreys and eels are very tasty, eels require a little more cooking or they are chewy. I used to get lampreys free from a local trout hacthery when they mucked out there runs.
If you live in an area that has elver runs you can fry, or poach them after rinsing, no cleaning required, they have a mild flavor vaguely like shrimp, and go good with scrambled eggs. Immature lampreys can be diced, soaked in salt water for a couple hours, drained and them fried and added to salads, eggs, etc.

I have tried catching Lampreys in the river behind my house, and have been unsucessful, i had a teacher once say that hima nd his father would take a canoe and float down the river with a pronged pole stabbing the bottom, he said the would "catch" tons this way

Might want to check the fish consumption advisory for your area in regards to eating adult eels. The really big ones quite possibly have spent 20 years in freshwater. That is a lot of time for nasty stuff to accumulate in their tissue. Just something to consider.

For starters, lampreys are not eels. Lampreys are agnathans while eels are jawed fish.
