Hi.

I read somewhere that adding soda bicarbonate in water, helps flowerhorn to get better KOK.

I tried it with moderte quantity.

one tea spoon in 20 gallons. 2 times a week. I feel its helping. The fish is healthy and kicking. Observeda minute increase in the KOK.

And above all the water that used to be pale, is crystal clear now. I change 50% water twice a week and clean the tank once in 2 weeks. I retain 50% water even while cleaning the tank.

PS:- my FH has small hard KOK.

Need yor comments on the quantity and usage of soda bicarbonate.

LOVE.

Hmmm I have never heard adding baking soda helped with "kok"....I would test my water and see if adding baking soda is necessary...I try to keep my water to my fish('s) liking, and can only suggest that everyone do the same...Thats just me..

Well sodium bicarbonate has a pka of 6.3.
This means that when dissolved into water depending on whatever the PH is where you are. Sodium Bicarbonate in general raises the PH of the solution. The sodium atom dissociates leaving the negatively charged bicarbonate which steals the Hydrogen atoms (H+) from the water. The PH is increased by an increase of OH- atoms. These formuals sums it up for you.

1)NaHCO3 + HCl → NaCl + H2CO3 ( This is one possible reaction that occurs that indirectly leads to step 3.)

2) HCO3- + H2O → H2CO3 + OH-
( This is one possible reaction that occurs with the water that leads to step 3)

3) H2CO3 → H2O + CO2 gas

Reaction wise there will be an increase in concentration of all the above :OH- (this is the high ph part), you have the presence of HCO3-,H2CO3, and CO2 gas. So if you want to know how much per a gallon it would depend on your tap PH initally and also how much of the ph you would want to set it at. It cant be given a definite answer without those parameters.

The only reason I see for not applying baking soda is that it has a side reaction where one of the intermediates will eat away protective oxide layers that cover easily corroded metals exposing it for chances to rust. (Don't know if the heater, powerhead, filter you are using might consist of these types of metal pieces.)

Best of luck keep us updated with pictures please.

if u wanna up ur ph its good and cheaper than the other stuff that costs a arm and a leg a guy at a lfs told me about this a year or 2 ago and it does work good ole ((((ARM & HAMMER))));)

baking soda is bad choice guys. It doesn't last long, really hard to figure out the right amount to add, and changes PH really fast= TROUBLE!!! As I said in your other post about this bro, higher PH promotes kok growth. Baking soda will do this, but as I stated above, it is BAD choice IMO. Crushed coral will do the same thing and at a slower rate and keep the PH stablized more than the baking soda. It's best to put some in some panty hose and put it directly in the filter, or you can mix it into the gravel.

Here r some pictures, but i have cleaned the tank today. so fish is littele dul and the head is also reduced.. Will post more pic , after a week.

I cleaned up the tank as was scared after reading some of the comments. Now there is no soda in the tank..
