2 cents per hour x 5 tanks=10 cents an hour
10 cents an hour x 20 hours=2 bucks
2 bucks a day x 30 days=60 bucks.

Am I missing your argument? 60 bucks isnt chump change to us young n poor
the estimate 2 cents was for all my tanks which have around 100 watts together, sorry if that was unclear.

doing math for me with me looking it up.
$0.12 per kilowatt hour
100/1000= .1
.12x .1= .012 dollars= 1.2 cents per hour

10 hours aday
10x1.2= 12 cents a day
12x 30 days= 360 cents a month= $3.60 a month

it cost me $3.60 a month to run 100 watts.

i encourage you to look up the facts for the benefit of your fish, i see to many people thinking there lights and water changes are bankrupting them. so they cut corners to the detriment of there fish. the funny thing is both of those things cost very little and the majority of the bill is misc. fees.

i also dont see the need to run your lights 20 hours a day.

fish dont require any light, 3 hours of light a day is fine , better than 12 hours , 8 to 10 hours is the best range , mine are on when i clap :) walgreens clapper is awsome! i just turn them on when i want

Like the bloke on the other page said, why do you want to have lights on all night when I assume, you are sleeping? That just makes no sense.

Turn it off and have them on from 5pm-11pm or something when you get in from work on the timer.

The reason why I do it is the tank is in the kitchen and my wife is fond of turning the main light on off, on off everytime she walks in there. This could total over 10 times per night. That's 10 times the fish are shocked, startled, scared and stressed each night. Leaving a light on in the night causes them not to react when the kitchen light is turned on.

We sometimes even get up in the middle of the night.

Most fish stores leave lights on at night(maybe not directly over each tank)

You've still not read what I said though. Yes okay your wife goes in and out the kitchen; so leave them on until you go to bed then. (Personally durnig the week that is 11pm-12pm for me so my lights go off then). You just said you sometimes get up in the night (implying not all the time) For those odd occassions I'm sure the fish will be fine. Much more fine than that amount of light you are stressing them with and the obvious inability to properly sleep (8-10 hours).
