Egg crate sump cover

wrap the egg crate in shrink wrap lol?

Haha. I was gonna use the plexiglass but was worried about it bowing. I guess if humidity and evaporation become an issue I will cut a piece of plexi to the same dimensions and zip tie or glue it to the egg crate.

if it's a single piece like the eggcrate, it shouldn't bow.

or you could just wrap it once in saran wrap and see how it goes ;)

tin snips work well for cutting it too...

but what about the humidity? I did basically the same thing you did, except using plexiglass from home depot. I used a table saw and an exacto knife to cut around the piping for my sump.

You shouldn't seal a sump, they need to breath to feed the bacteria and release the bad gasses.

Lots and lots of people cover sumps to keep heat in and humidity in check. I have done both don't really see a difference.

There's air in the water, plus agitation, completly sealing a sump isn't going to harm anything and will save on evaporation and heat loss. How do you think a canister works?

not to mention the other good replies, but also it's not totally sealed. There is a gap around the incoming pipes, outgoing pipes, and two other gaps for heater cord/airline... just as the OPs egg create has.

I know exactly how a canister works and that's why I like sumps more. Canisters are nitrate factories because they're sealed.

My meg flow 4 came with an acrylic cover, the diffusion chamber airates the water very well.

I have the same sump and it's not sealed. It has vents over the bio chamber and is open over the pump chamber and you're right the defusion chamber airates great.

As for my original post I should have added " to work at sumps peek efficiency it shouldn't be sealed" it can be sealed but you're taking away some of it's benefits.
