Egg crate sump cover

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ford or Chevy? Strawberry or grape? Sump or canister? We all have our preferences and we all know what works for us, thats the beauty of this hobby.

Heres another picture I took of the sump from a lower angle showing where the plumbing is coming from the tank and where my heater controller is mounted.

I have the same sump and it's not sealed. It has vents over the bio chamber and is open over the pump chamber and you're right the defusion chamber airates great.

As for my original post I should have added " to work at sumps peek efficiency it shouldn't be sealed" it can be sealed but you're taking away some of it's benefits.

Sump works great , mine does have a cover over the wet dry portion though, its a little warpped uploadfromtaptalk1349210485259.jpg, my cover actually covers the pump chamber as well, I don't use it due to mods . But even if I did in no way is it "sealed".

I know exactly how a canister works and that's why I like sumps more. Canisters are nitrate factories because they're sealed.

Lol what? I've had a few canisters and very messy fish, it has never leached n03 into my tank, I know cuz I tested before I even had canisters. I guess if you don't clean it for a year it may, but a canister does NOT create nitrates if properly maintained, which takes 10min every 3 months, that's 40min per year.

Not sure why you keep posting false info, 1st a sump can't be covered all the way, 2nd canisters are "nitrate" factories......?

right now my n03 is 5-10ppm with 5 6-7" rbp and a Fx5....

And you realise there's oxygen in water, and that water goes thru your filtration, how do you think BB survives in a canister? Jw

Oxygen gets into water by diffusion, from current, agitation and aeration. If you don't understand the fact that water contains oxygen, how do you even know how your fish breath?

F1 Vet I can just see you stomping your feet saying "I know I'm right, I know I'm right". :swear::screwy:

1) Believe me I understand that water H2O contains 2 oxygen atoms per unit. Grow up, I know my fishes gills absorb oxygen.
2) I understand aerobic an anaerobic bacteria much better than you apparently.
3) What you don't understand is gas exchange, Google it!
4) If you don't have N03 leaching in your tank why do you have Nitrates? the're the same thing. We all have some level of N03, unless you tape your fishes butt closed.
5) I own a couple of FX5s and they take more than 10min to clean, I'd like to see you make a video to prove me wrong. Start to finish.
6) I guess wet dry sumps don't need air??? You're feeding BB air in a WD. If you deny the dry part fresh air it will eventually be overcome by bad gases and kill your aerobic BB.
7) You would be loosing a area to re-oxygenate your water if you seal the sump or restrict it. So the water falling in from the tank would not oxygenate the water.
8) What's your problem, I look at your post on other threads and it seems like you like to go around and start arguments. The war is over take a :chillpill:

Your going to make it personal about my job and tell me to take a chill pill?

Your telling people not to cover their sumps with glass or acrylic

And you say canisters ARE NITRATE FACTORIES BECAUSE THEIR SEALED??

And im the bad guy?

BTW when did I argue with you?

not to mention the other good replies, but also it's not totally sealed. There is a gap around the incoming pipes, outgoing pipes, and two other gaps for heater cord/airline... just as the OPs egg create has.

My meg flow 4 came with an acrylic cover, the diffusion chamber airates the water very well.

There's air in the water, plus agitation, completly sealing a sump isn't going to harm anything and will save on evaporation and heat loss. How do you think a canister works?

Go S. Vettel #1 rb8

Lots and lots of people cover sumps to keep heat in and humidity in check. I have done both don't really see a difference.

You shouldn't seal a sump, they need to breath to feed the bacteria and release the bad gasses.

I tried with scissors first but it seemed to shatter the piece next to the one I was cutting. So I took the blade out of a hack saw and used that. Worked great, it took a little longer than I had hoped but at least it didn't get ruined by using the scissors]

dykes work awesome, the close cutting ones used for snipping zipties without leaving that little sharp bit.
