I would recommend the clay balls/substrat pro over the pot scrubbies. I'm sure the clay balls would come up a bit cheaper. At least here they are lol

If your friend isn't dead set on pot scrubbies, I would recommend that he use lava rock instead. He might need to smash it up with a hammer to get smaller pieces but I think it will provide a ton more surface area.

I also think it's a good idea to have a mechanical sponge under whatever he ends up running in it. It will just help keep it cleaner.

Thanks I ended up using pot scrubbers, sponge pads to catch, bio balls and ceramic rings
